Microchip Expands Edge AI Portfolio With Hailo Deal

THE VOLT VOTES

Microchip Technology is doubling down on edge AI. The company has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hailo, a specialist in accelerated edge AI processors, advanced vision solutions, robotics chips and end-to-end AI software flows. The deal is expected to close toward the end of the current quarter ending September 30, pending customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

With Hailo, Microchip aims to significantly expand its processing portfolio for intelligent edge systems.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Microchip’s ability to deliver accelerated, power-efficient edge AI solutions for robotics, advanced vision processing and a broad range of intelligent edge applications, from drones and robots to smart cameras, industrial automation equipment and embedded AI systems.

Hailo has built a strong reputation for technology leadership in both edge AI accelerators and vision systems-on-chip. Its lineup spans high-performance deployments on specialty edge servers running local GenAI and multimodal workloads, as well as ultra-low-power vision processing inside compact, stand-alone cameras.

With the Hailo-8, Hailo-10 and Hailo-15 product families, Microchip gains platforms that support traditional computer vision while adding advanced camera, ISP and DSP functionality, along with video encoding and AI video stream processing for intelligent edge devices.

Beyond the silicon, Microchip is acquiring an active ecosystem. Hailo brings more than 100 current customers and a developer community of over 10,000 users.

Its portfolio covers both edge AI accelerators and vision SoCs, supporting a wide range of workloads and capabilities, including CNNs, transformers, LLM/VLM models, image signal processing, DSP, H.264/H.265 video encoding and AI-based video stream processing.

Hailo’s demand-generation engine is another key asset. The company has nurtured a self-sustaining funnel for edge AI adoption through its Raspberry Pi ecosystem, gated Developer Zone, GitHub projects and community forum, channels that help turn developer interest into qualified opportunities and customer pipeline.

The agreement aligns closely with Microchip’s broader strategy to enable power-efficient AI at the edge. The company previously expanded its AI capabilities with the acquisition of Neuronix AI Labs, adding neural network optimization technology for AI/ML workloads on FPGAs and SoCs.

The transaction builds on that foundation, introducing dedicated edge AI processors, vision SoCs and enhanced software tools that broaden Microchip’s ability to support accelerated AI and advanced vision processing in edge environments.

“The acquisition of Hailo accelerates Microchip’s expansion into high-performance edge AI processing,” said Mark Reiten, Senior Corporate Vice President. “Hailo’s AI acceleration, advanced vision processing and software ecosystem directly complements Microchip’s embedded processing, FPGA, connectivity, security, power and analog portfolio. Together, we can help customers build more capable intelligent edge systems with the right balance of performance, power efficiency, reliability and system cost.”

“Joining Microchip would give Hailo the opportunity to scale our accelerated edge AI technology through a global embedded systems leader,” said Hailo CEO Orr Danon. “Microchip’s customer reach, channel scale and broad technology portfolio would create a strong platform for bringing advanced vision processing and AI acceleration to broader range of intelligent edge applications.”

Financial details are not being disclosed, and Microchip does not expect the transaction to have a material impact on its near-term results.
