Renesas, GlobalFoundries Enhanced Alliance to Boost Chip Supply Chain

GlobalFoundries and Renesas Electronics have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership through a new multi?billion?dollar manufacturing agreement.

The collaboration will give Renesas broader access to GF’s advanced and differentiated technologies, while reinforcing both companies’ commitment to secure and resilient semiconductor supply chains, a priority closely aligned with U.S. efforts to strengthen domestic chip production for economic and national security.

As vehicles become smarter and more electric, and factories more automated, the chips powering them are taking on increasingly complex tasks from enabling radar in advanced driver-assistance systems to managing EV batteries and ensuring secure industrial connectivity.

Reliable semiconductor supply is essential for these applications, and GF’s global manufacturing network spanning the U.S., Europe, and Asia offers customers the flexibility and assurance they need to keep pace with rapidly evolving market demands.

Through this deal, Renesas gains deeper access to GF’s technology portfolio, including FDX™ (FD-SOI), BCD, and feature-rich CMOS technologies with embedded non-volatile memory.

These will support Renesas’ portfolio of SoCs, power devices, and microcontrollers. The first tape-outs under the expanded partnership are expected to begin in mid?2026.

Production will begin at GF’s U.S. facilities and later expand to its sites in Germany and Singapore, as well as through its manufacturing partnership in China.

GlobalFoundries and Renesas Electronics are also exploring the possibility of transferring select GF process technologies into Renesas’ in-house fabs in Japan to further strengthen supply resilience and meet future capacity needs.

GlobalFoundries and Renesas Electronics partnership is said to be part of a larger push to bring critical chip technologies back onshore and strengthen U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing. It also ensures that Renesas and its customers have secure, locally produced chip options.

With this expanded partnership, GF now supplies semiconductors to the world’s top three automotive MCU makers.

Leadership Comments

“This partnership strengthens a proven relationship and underscores GF’s role as a trusted partner for essential semiconductor technologies,” said Tim Breen, CEO of GlobalFoundries. “The automotive landscape is changing fast. Semiconductors are now the foundation of innovation, powering advanced driver assistance, battery management US semiconductor supply chains GlobalFoundries, Renesas deal The Volt Postand secure connectivity. These systems demand performance and efficiency under extreme conditions, and GF’s differentiated platforms are built for that. We’re focused on delivering what matters most: reliable supply and the technologies that enable the vehicles of tomorrow.”

“Access to a broader range of GF technologies gives us the flexibility and supply assurance our customers need,” said Hidetoshi Shibata, CEO of Renesas. “This expanded partnership enables a stable, long-term supply of semiconductors while ensuring the highest quality and reliability for our products. These capabilities are essential as we deliver advanced solutions, with demand for electrification and connectivity — and the rapidly growing compute requirements driven by AI applications — accelerating worldwide.”
