The global PCB shortage is squeezing supply across the electronics sector and pushing device prices higher. For manufacturers, the issue is no longer just about sourcing delays, as it is now affecting production costs, delivery schedules and planning across the value chain.

Printed circuit boards sit at the heart of most electronic products, from smartphones and laptops to appliances, industrial equipment and server hardware. When PCB supply tightens, the pressure quickly moves from factories to finished product pricing.
Why supply is tightening
The current PCB shortage strain is being driven by a combination of stronger demand and raw material shortages.
Rapid growth in AI server deployments has increased demand for advanced PCBs, while disruptions in West Asia have affected the flow of key materials used in board manufacturing.
Industry reports also point to steep increases in input costs. Over the past year, low bromine epoxy resin has risen by around 70%, while copper foil and electrolytic copper have climbed by more than 30%, adding more pressure on PCB suppliers.
What it means for prices
As PCB suppliers pass on higher costs, electronics manufacturers are seeing tighter margins.
In some cases, rising board prices are already feeding into broader device inflation, especially for products that rely on advanced multilayer boards and specialized materials.
Analysts and industry reports have noted sharp price jumps in recent months, with some markets seeing increases of up to 40% in a short period. That kind of move can affect everything from component procurement to launch pricing and inventory planning.
India’s push to build capacity
For India, the PCB shortage comes at a crucial time. The country is working to strengthen domestic electronics manufacturing through the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, with investments worth more than ?15,000 crore reportedly in the pipeline.
Companies such as Syrma SGS are expanding capacity, while industry stakeholders are pressing for faster development of critical materials to reduce import dependence and keep costs under control.
The broader aim is to build a supply chain that can handle global shocks more effectively.
Outlook ahead
The near-term outlook remains difficult because the shortage is linked to both material availability and sustained demand from advanced computing.
Lead times are stretching, procurement cycles are getting longer and manufacturers are being forced to plan further ahead than before.
For consumers, the impact may show up gradually through higher device prices, fewer discounts and slower product replenishment rather than a sudden jump in prices.
