FPT Among First in Europe to Secure EU Battery Certification

THE VOLT VOTES

FPT has secured EU Battery Certification under the European Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 as a manufacturer of high-voltage batteries placing it among just three companies in Europe to achieve this milestone so far.

The EU Battery Certification followed a comprehensive audit at FPT’s carbon-neutral ePowertrain facility in Turin, Italy. The review covered the full lifecycle of the company’s eBS 37 EVO high-voltage battery, including its design, development, and manufacturing processes. This battery is designed for use in light commercial vehicles, minibuses, and marine applications.

The audit was conducted by a multinational team, including three auditors from TÜV SÜD Denmark ApS, three representatives from DANAK (Denmark’s national accreditation body), and one representative from Accredia, Italy’s accreditation authority. Overall, the feedback was highly positive, with auditors commending both FPT’s quality systems and its production line.

For customers, the certification offers added confidence in both product quality and performance. Every stage of the process has been rigorously evaluated, ensuring high standards of traceability, durability, and reliability. FPT’s battery systems are also “battery passport-ready,” aligning with emerging European requirements for transparency and lifecycle tracking.

While compliance with EU 2023/1542 will become mandatory for all European battery manufacturers in the near future, FPT has already met the standard since 2024, positioning itself ahead of the curve.

The audit also marked a significant milestone for TÜV SÜD Denmark ApS, which received accreditation from DANAK under the same regulation. This enables the organization to certify high-voltage battery manufacturers for CE marking, making it one of the first three technical service providers in Europe to reach this capability.

Notably, TÜV SÜD selected FPT and Iveco Group’s Technology & Digital Validation and Homologation division to demonstrate its ability to carry out compliant audits at battery manufacturing facilities.

eBS 37 EVO: High-density, safety-focused battery pack

At the center of this certification is the eBS 37 EVO, a 37 kWh modular battery pack designed for commercial and marine applications.

It uses advanced NMC lithium-ion cell technology (NMC 811), delivering high energy density and up to 95% depth of discharge, which helps reduce overall battery weight while maintaining strong performance.

The battery is managed by FPT’s in-house developed eBM 5 Battery Management System, which optimizes performance and extends lifecycle based on specific usage conditions. Its internal architecture is engineered to meet stringent safety standards, including ECE R100.4 and ECE R10.

Key specifications

  • Cell technology: Lithium-ion (NMC 811)
  • Cooling system: Water-cooled
  • Configuration: Up to 4 packs in parallel, 2 in series
  • Nominal energy: 37 kWh
  • Nominal voltage: 355 V
  • Energy density: Over 140 Wh/kg
  • Continuous C-rate: 1C (charge), 2C (discharge)
  • Protection rating: IP6K9K / IP67
  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 925 x 854 x 310 mm
  • Weight: 260 kg
  • Lifecycle: 2,500 cycles
  • Battery Management System: FPT eBM 5
