As factory floors get smarter and humanoid robots step further into real-world environments, they need better “eyes” to navigate complex tasks. To meet that demand, OMNIVISION has rolled out the OG05D, the industry’s first 2.2-micron, 5-megapixel global shutter CMOS image sensor equipped with High Dynamic Range (HDR).

Purpose-built for industrial machine vision, barcode scanners, compact AI cameras, and data collection for robotics training, the new sensor brings some massive generational leaps to the table. Most notably? Speed and size.
Hitting a maximum output of 146 frames per second (fps) in linear mode, the OG05D is a staggering 143% faster than OMNIVISION’s previous generation. It is also 30% smaller, squeezing into a 1/2.5-inch optical format that frees up critical real estate for engineers designing space-constrained embedded systems.
Seeing clearly in the dark and the light
The real game-changer for this sensor is how it handles unpredictable lighting. Industrial environments, from dim warehouses to brightly lit outdoor loading docks, are notoriously difficult for standard cameras.
The OG05D tackles this by combining a stacked backside-illuminated (BSI) design with Dual Conversion Gain (DCG). This allows it to deliver single-exposure HDR, capturing bright highlights and deep shadows in the same frame without the motion artifacts and blurring that usually plague traditional multi-exposure setups.
Coupled with OMNIVISION’s proprietary Nyxel near-infrared (NIR) technology and built-in RGB-IR on-chip processing, the sensor provides clean, low-noise imaging that drastically improves object detection and automated navigation.
Key Spec Breakdown:
- The footprint: A 2.2µm 5MP BSI global shutter featuring the industry’s smallest >70dB HDR-capable pixel (package size of 6.6µm x 5.3µm).
- Enhanced night vision: Nyxel tech boosts NIR quantum efficiency (QE) to >55% at 850nm and >35% at 940nm.
- Energy efficient: Consumes 30% less power than previous 5MP models.
- Robust HDR: Supports both 60 fps DCG single-exposure and 3-exposure (3s) HDR on-chip combinations.
- Format flexibility: Supports RGB, monochrome, and RGB-IR, complete with RGB-IR on-chip re-mosaic.
Hardware designers looking to integrate the new tech don’t have to wait long. The OG05D sensor is already available for sampling, with mass production slated for Q4 2026.
