Top Tech Voices New Season – Curiosity, Tiny Experiments & Future of Cities

THE VOLT VOTES

element14’s Top Tech Voices podcast continues its latest season with two fresh episodes featuring neuroscientist and founder Dr Anne-Laure Le Cunff and architect and MIT professor Carlo Ratti.

In episode five, Dr Anne-Laure Le Cunff explores the role of curiosity as a practical tool for navigating uncertainty in modern work and life. Drawing on neuroscience and her work with knowledge workers around the world, she challenges the long-held belief that success comes from rigid planning and control.

Instead, she makes a strong case for an experimental mindset, one where decisions are treated as small, testable hypotheses rather than fixed commitments.

At the centre of her thinking is the idea of “tiny experiments”: simple, repeatable actions that help people test ideas, gather feedback, and refine their approach over time. Rather than depending on willpower or sweeping changes, this method focuses on building momentum through continuous, low-risk learning.

She also points to the importance of paying attention to internal signals, energy, motivation, and emotional response alongside external outcomes.

Just as important, she notes, workplace culture environments that encourage curiosity, openness, and experimentation make it far easier for individuals to adapt and do meaningful work. The conversation also touches on AI as a thinking partner, a tool that can help uncover patterns and insights without replacing human judgment.

Episode six turns to the future of cities, with Professor Carlo Ratti exploring how data, sensing technologies and design can create more responsive and human-centred urban environments. Drawing on projects from around the world, Ratti looks at how cities can respond more effectively to challenges such as climate change, population growth, and shifting mobility patterns.

From flood mitigation efforts in Venice to the growing use of real-time data in urban planning, he shows how “cyber-physical” systems can adapt dynamically to local conditions.

Data plays a central role in this vision. Ratti argues that real-time insights can help cities pinpoint where action is needed most, whether that’s expanding green space or upgrading infrastructure.

At the same time, he stresses that this must be balanced with clear principles around privacy and trust, including anonymisation and transparency in how data is collected and used.

The Top Tech Voices podcast episode also addresses the tension between technology and public life, while digital tools can make cities more efficient, they can also erode spontaneous interaction and community connection.

For Ratti, that makes the intentional design and protection of public spaces more important than ever.

“What stands out in these conversations is how progress often comes from small, thoughtful changes — whether that’s experimenting with how we work or rethinking how cities respond to real-world conditions,” said Rebeca Obregon, President of element14. “Technology plays a role in both, but its value comes from how it is applied in context — supporting better decisions, better environments and ultimately better outcomes for people.”
