Japan’s TDK Corporation is doubling down on India with a proposed ?4,000 crore (~$475 million) investment to build a cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility in Haryana.

The announcement came during the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, where TDK executives pitched the project directly to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Minister Manohar Lal.
This greenfield BESS plant will bolster India’s grid stability and renewable integration, capitalizing on surging demand for large-scale energy storage amid the country’s 500 GW non-fossil target by 2030. Haryana’s investor-friendly policies, robust infrastructure, and proximity to Delhi-NCR make it a prime spot for such high-tech manufacturing.
TDK already operates a sprawling 180-acre campus in Sohna, Haryana, focused on electronic components and passives.
The new BESS unit aligns perfectly with TDK’s global push into energy storage solutions, including lithium-ion modules and power electronics for EVs and renewables. Company reps highlighted the state’s skilled workforce and seamless logistics as key draws during Friday’s summit meeting.
“Haryana continues to shine as a magnet for global tech giants,” said CM Saini post-meeting. “TDK’s commitment validates our pro-business ecosystem and positions the state as India’s energy storage hub.”
Why This Matters for India’s Energy Future
-
Scale:Â ?4,000 Cr investment rivals major semiconductor projects, signaling BESS as critical infrastructure.
-
Jobs Boost:Â Thousands of high-skill roles in battery assembly, testing, and R&D.
-
Renewable Synergy:Â BESS unlocks solar/wind curtailment, stabilizing 24/7 power supply.
-
Japan-India Ties:Â Builds on recent pacts like the India-Japan CEPA upgrade and semiconductor MoUs.
The project awaits final state and central approvals, with land allocation and incentives under Haryana’s investment promotion board. TDK‘s move comes hot on Micron’s Gujarat DRAM fab and Tata’s UK battery gigafactory JV, underscoring Asia’s energy storage race.
Expect groundbreaking within 12-18 months if clearances align.
