A $5Bn Sharp Display Fab Semi Facility in India Soon

According to mainstream media reports, the Japanese Tech major, Sharp intends to invest $3–5 billion to establish a display fab semiconductor facility in India.A 5Bn Sharp Display Fab Semiconductor Facility in India the volt post

Notably, Sharp intends to establish a 1,000-acre display fab semiconductor facility in India that would surpass the size of its Japanese production, said the reports.

Sharp intends to use the Indian plant to meet export and domestic demand.

“The company is scouting for land to create a large manufacturing set-up spread across 1,000 acres which will manufacture the latest-generation Series 10 displays. These are some of the most advanced display fab versions that the industry currently makes,” a mainstream media quoting a source.

Sharp is also in discussions with the state governments of Telangana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra to establish the state-of-the-art display fab semiconductor facility.

Sharp’s possible multi-billion-dollar investment might be a game-changer, placing the country as a strong competitor in the global display and electronics supply chain, as the competition to acquire a foothold in India’s expanding semiconductor industry heats up.

Sharp has reportedly told the Central Government that it plans to use the Indian facility as a hub for worldwide manufacturing, according to the article. “Sharp officials stated that the planned factory will supply display fabs to important global markets in addition to India.”

Ongoing elections, however, may cause the final clearance to take about 10 months.

A new administration will evaluate the ongoing proposals following the polls. The government is also looking into ways to encourage new entrants and the semiconductor incentive program.

Prior to Sharp, the Indian government shared with media that it had been contacted by Israel’s Tower Semiconductors to establish a fabrication facility valued at Rs 90,000 crore.

India has launched a $10 billion incentive scheme in an effort to encourage the production of semiconductors there. Other steps taken to fulfill labor needs and promote the growth of a supporting ecosystem are also being taken.

Other Companies in Line to Setup Semiconductor Manufacturing in India

  • In June of last year, Micron was the first business to declare plans to build a sizable semiconductor testing and packaging plant in Gujarat, at a cost of around Rs 22,500 crore. In February of this year, the government accepted three applications, totaling almost Rs 1.3 lakh crore.
  • Among these initiatives was a Rs 91,000 crore project by Tata Electronics to build the first semiconductor fabrication plant in India at Dholera, Gujarat, in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
  • Other ideas included the establishment of the Rs 27,000 crore Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) factory in Morigaon, Assam, and a Rs 7,600 crore project by CG Power in association with the Japanese companies Renesas Electronics and Stars Microelectroni.
  • American Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stated in July of last year that it will invest $400 million in India to establish its largest design center in Bangalore. Currently, India accounts for around one-third of the world’s semiconductor design work.

Televisions and other digital screens are made using the display fabs and Sharp plans to expand to tap the potential indigenous market.
