MIKROE Launches Compact UWB Board for Real-Time Location

THE VOLT VOTES

MIKROE has introduced the RTLS UWB Click board™, a compact add-on board designed for high-precision real-time location, distance measurement and motion-aware tracking using ultra-wideband (UWB) communication.

The embedded solutions company, known for its hardware and software products based on established development standards, has developed the board around Qorvo’s DWM3001C UWB module. The module combines a DW3110 UWB transceiver with an nRF52833 Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) SoC and a LIS2DH12 accelerometer, providing the core elements required for an integrated tracking solution.

The RTLS UWB Click supports two-way ranging (TWR) communication and is designed for applications that require accurate positioning and distance measurement.

UWB Connectivity and Security

The board includes an integrated planar UWB antenna and power management circuitry. It supports IEEE 802.15.4-2015 and IEEE 802.15.4z BPRF standards and operates on UWB channels 5 and 9.

With data rates of up to 6.8 Mbps, the board is suited to applications requiring responsive wireless communication and precise location data. Security features include AES-128/256 encryption.

MIKROE developed the solution in collaboration with LEAPS, a Prague-based company focused on real-time location and telemetry systems based on UWB technology. LEAPS provides RTLS hardware and software, design services and technology licensing.

Designed for MikroBUS Development

The RTLS UWB Click is part of MIKROE’s expanding Click board™ ecosystem, which now includes more than 2,000 compact add-on development boards based on the mikroBUS™ standard.

The board also supports ClickID, allowing the host system to automatically identify the connected Click board. This is intended to simplify development and integration across compatible host platforms.

MIKROE has also made the board available across its EmbeddedWiki ecosystem, where developers can browse 877 ready-to-use embedded projects featuring the RTLS UWB Click.

By combining UWB ranging, BLE connectivity and motion sensing on a single compact board, the RTLS UWB Click board gives developers a ready-to-integrate platform for building and evaluating real-time location and tracking applications.

Leadership Comment

Comments Nebojsa Matic, CEO of MIKROE: “This approach is perfect for asset tracking and automated inventory management where sub-decimeter location accuracy is required. It can help improve safety and operational efficiency in large factories, and is suitable for indoor navigation in hospitals, shopping malls, and airports where GPS signals are unavailable.”
