Infineon Technologies and Wolfspeed have signed a multi-year agreement that upgrades their SiC supply line from 150mm to 200mm wafers.

With SiC now serving as the foundational technology for global decarbonization, powering everything from electric vehicles and solar grids to AI data centers, this is a highly strategic move. It fuels Infineon’s transition to 200mm manufacturing, locking in the supply chain resilience required to maintain its dominance in the power semiconductor market.
While EVs and industrial motor drives have traditionally steered SiC adoption, AI data centers are rapidly emerging as a massive new demand driver. For hyperscalers managing server infrastructure at this scale, power conversion efficiency is a direct, critical operating cost.
When traditional silicon hits its switching and thermal limits, SiC steps in as the clear technical successor. Combine this surging data center demand with the ongoing electrification of automotive and renewable systems, and the long-term outlook for high-quality 200mm SiC substrates looks exceptionally strong.
The shift to 200mm wafers isn’t just a technical milestone; it completely transforms the manufacturing economics. The larger diameter yields significantly more usable die per wafer, directly driving down per-unit costs and boosting overall fab efficiency.
For Infineon, securing this Wolfspeed supply is a core piece of a broader, multi-source strategy designed to keep its global network agile and secure. Crucially, it feeds directly into the company’s 200mm SiC fab in Kulim, Malaysia, a facility engineered to be the largest and most competitive silicon carbide plant in the world.
Leadership Comment
“Silicon carbide is at the heart of the energy transition, and securing a high-quality, resilient supply of 200-millimeter substrates is essential to delivering on our customers’ long-term commitments,” said Alexander Gorski, Chief Operations Officer at Infineon. “This agreement further broadens our strong supply base for our 200-millimeter high-volume manufacturing, building on a 20-year supply relationship between our two companies. It strengthens supply chain security for our customers and provides additional flexibility and scalability to support Infineon’s future growth.”
