R&M says its MPO-QR and MTP fiber optic connectors have delivered equivalent performance in recent testing, with both connector types meeting the optical requirements of high-density fiber networks.
R&M has used stringent testing guidelines for its MPO products for several years. A comparison of test results collected over recent months showed that the MPO-QR and MTP variants were fully compatible and comparable, the company said.
Why Connector Testing Matters
Insertion loss and return loss are becoming increasingly important factors for buyers and
network operators evaluating fiber optic connectors.
MPO and MTP serve as key links in high-density fiber networks deployed in data centers, internet exchanges, and broadband infrastructure.
Their precision requirements are particularly demanding as many as 24 fibers must be routed in parallel across an endface measuring about 16 square millimeters, with each fiber aligned to micrometer-level accuracy.
Insertion loss indicates how much optical power is lost as a signal passes through a connector. Return loss measures the amount of light reflected back toward the source. Both parameters can affect link budgets, signal quality, and network reliability.
Comparing MPO and MTP
MPO and MTP connectors are widely used multi-fiber formats, but buyers must evaluate more than optical performance when selecting between them.
Important considerations include:
- Housing material and manufacturing process.
- Polarity-change method.
- Guide-pin design, alignment, and durability.
- Transmission distance and bandwidth requirements.
- Fiber density and future scalability.
- Mating-cycle expectations.
- Local operating conditions.

R&M concluded that high-end MPO and MTP can deliver identical optical values when manufactured and tested to the appropriate quality standards.
MPO connectors are generally viewed as versatile and cost-effective solutions for data-center applications. MTP connectors, meanwhile, are known for features such as robust construction, twist-resistant guide pins, and long-term durability.
