As vehicles generate and process ever-growing volumes of sensor data, asymmetric network technologies like ASA are becoming critical. But as the ecosystem expands across multiple vendors, ensuring interoperability is getting increasingly complex.

Rohde & Schwarz is tackling this challenge with its new ASA Motion Link compliance solution for the R&S RTP oscilloscope designed to simplify standards-based testing, speed up debugging, and ensure seamless communication across automotive systems.
Formed in 2019, the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA) set out to create an open, scalable standard for high-speed asymmetric SerDes technology in multi-vendor environments.
The standard is well-suited for moving massive data streams from high-resolution cameras, LiDAR, and radar sensors to ECUs, and from ECUs to ultra-wide, high-definition displays.
All of this happens while maintaining electromagnetic compatibility with other sensitive vehicle electronics. With bandwidth scaling up to 16 Gbps per lane, ASA effectively serves as the high-speed “nervous system” needed for Level 3 autonomous driving and beyond.
Rohde & Schwarz has been actively involved in the alliance from the beginning, contributing to key technical committees.
Its latest R&S SPLUS-K105 option, integrated into the ScopeSuite+ software, delivers comprehensive electrical compliance testing for the newest ASA Motion Link standard.
The software fully automates control of the R&S RTP oscilloscope, guiding engineers through each test case with an intuitive step-by-step wizard and web-based interface. It supports all speed grades from SG1 to SG5 and also enables control of the R&S ZNB3000 and other compatible VNAs for precise return loss measurements.
By combining oscilloscope, VNA, and compliance software, the solution enables detailed signal integrity analysis, time-domain impedance evaluation, and highly repeatable measurements. This makes it easier to validate PHYs, ECUs, cables, and connectors ultimately helping ensure robust and reliable automotive communication.
