Vishay Intertechnology has introduced a new series of AC line-rated ceramic disc safety capacitors designed for EMI and RFI suppression in industrial and high-voltage applications.

The Vishay BCcomponents SMDY1…S series features: 

  • Y1 safety rating of 300 VAC and 1500 VDC in a surface-mount package.
  • The compact design reduces board space requirements by up to 40% compared with previous-generation devices, helping manufacturers develop smaller products.

With a Y1 rating, the new safety capacitors can bridge double or reinforced insulation. They also support use in DC networks of up to 1500 VDC in accordance with Annex H of the relevant IEC standard.

The SMDY1…S series exceeds the industry-standard insulation resistance requirement of 6000 M?, offering a minimum insulation resistance of 10,000 M?. The capacitors operate across a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, extending the lower end of the standard -40°C to +125°C range.

For reliability, Vishay subjects every component to 100% production testing. The end-of-line process includes a five-point verification protocol covering AC voltage, capacitance, dissipation factor, insulation resistance, and final visual inspection.

The surface-mount construction supports pick-and-place assembly and reflow soldering, eliminating the manual soldering typically required for through-hole components. This helps simplify manufacturing and reduce production costs.

The safety capacitors comply with IEC 60384-14 and are certified by UL, CSA, VDE, ENEC, and CQC. They are also RoHS-compliant and halogen-free. Each device consists of a copper- and silver-plated ceramic disc with flame-resistant epoxy resin encapsulation rated UL 94 V-0.

The SMDY1…S series is available in A case sizes with capacitance values from 10 pF to 680 pF, and B case sizes ranging from 1000 pF to 1500 pF.
