Airports of Thailand (AOT) is rolling out Rohde & Schwarz’s QPS201 advanced imaging technology (AIT) security scanners across five of its airports, including Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, one of Asia’s busiest hubs with around 60 million passengers a year.
What’s changing at AOT checkpoints
The German security and test-equipment specialist won the contract to supply ECAC- and TSA-certified QPS201 millimetre-wave scanners to passenger screening lanes at AOT-managed airports.
Suvarnabhumi, which operates a single large terminal for both domestic and international flights, is a key site in the deployment.
AOT cited the QPS201’s speed, accuracy and passenger-friendly design as reasons for the selection, noting faster clearance times and an improved screening experience without compromising security.
How the QPS201 works
The QPS201 uses safe millimetre-wave radio frequency technology combined with AI-based detection algorithms to spot concealed prohibited items while keeping false alarms low.
Each scan takes only milliseconds, and passengers adopt a simple “hands-down” pose inside an open-architecture scanner.
Instead of displaying a real-body image, the system renders threats on a generic digital avatar, preserving privacy by not revealing personal attributes.
The scanners meet high regulatory standards for aviation security and are already in use at major airports worldwide, with more than 2,000 units deployed globally.
Certifications and global footprint
Rohde & Schwarz’s QPS201 earned TSA qualification in 2022, placing it on the U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s Qualified Products List for use at American airport checkpoints.
It also holds certification from the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) and other aviation authorities, making it suitable for international deployments.
Recent contracts underscore its traction, the TSA selected the QPS201 for screening systems at FIFA World Cup 2026 host-city airports in the U.S., and Kansai International Airport in Japan marked the installation of the 2,000th QPS201 unit in early 2025.

For Suvarnabhumi and other AOT airports, the upgrade aligns with broader efforts to modernise security infrastructure, boost throughput and enhance the passenger experience as traffic recovers and grows.
The combination of faster scans, lower false-alarm rates and privacy-preserving imaging is intended to ease congestion at checkpoints while maintaining robust security standards.
