IIT Bhubaneswar has entered into a five year memorandum of understanding with Banashree Semiconductors to expand collaboration in semiconductor research, chip design education and technical skill development.

The partnership is intended to connect academic research with the practical needs of the semiconductor industry.
It will bring together IIT Bhubaneswar’s research capabilities and Banashree Semiconductors’ expertise in low power chip design, advanced silicon node technologies and efficient system on chip architectures.
Advancing chip design research
The agreement will support joint research and development projects focused on semiconductor design and optimisation. The two organisations will work on design flows that improve power, performance and area, commonly known as PPA.
Banashree Semiconductors also works on architectures that use fewer transistors for system on chip applications. These approaches can help reduce design complexity while improving energy efficiency and performance across electronic systems.
The partnership will also explore externally funded research projects and consultancy opportunities in semiconductor design and related technologies.
Building industry ready talent
Student training and industry exposure are central to the collaboration. IIT Bhubaneswar students will have access to internships, project work, specialised training and research opportunities with Banashree Semiconductors.
Engineers and scientists from the company will participate in academic and research activities at the institute. Their involvement is expected to give students a closer understanding of commercial chip development processes and the skills needed to work in the semiconductor industry.
The partnership also includes plans for joint workshops, seminars, short term courses, conferences and research publications.
Sharing tools and infrastructure
IIT Bhubaneswar and Banashree Semiconductors will explore opportunities to share computing resources, electronic design automation tools, laboratories, testing facilities and other research infrastructure.
Access to these resources could support collaborative experimentation and help translate academic research into practical semiconductor design applications.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Vijay Shankar Pasupureddi, Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy at IIT Bhubaneswar, and Dr Chandramohan Umapathy, Director of Banashree Semiconductors. Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, attended the signing ceremony.
Supporting India’s semiconductor ambitions
The agreement comes at a time when India is expanding its focus on domestic chip design, semiconductor manufacturing and electronics development. Stronger partnerships between academic institutions and technology companies will be important to building the skilled workforce required by the sector.
For IIT Bhubaneswar, the collaboration adds to its efforts to deepen semiconductor research and industry engagement. The institute has also been involved in initiatives related to compound semiconductor research, chip design education and semiconductor infrastructure development in Odisha.
The partnership with Banashree Semiconductors is expected to create more opportunities for students and faculty to work on industry relevant research and gain experience with real world semiconductor projects.
