The electric vehicle market is developing more dynamically. However, one of the challenges for this industry remains the issue of charging, which is why leading manufacturers around the world are engaged in delivering increasingly efficient solutions. Omron, whose relays are available in the TME catalog, also belongs to this group.

In the article, we will introduce the G9KC series.

Automotive Revolution

For some time now, there has been increasing talk about phasing out emission-generating combustion cars from the automotive market and replacing them with electric counterparts. According to the directives adopted almost worldwide, including in European Union countries, within the next few years, there is a commitment to reduce or completely replace traditionally fueled vehicles in favor of electric vehicles.

Following trends, the world’s largest car manufacturers are introducing new models powered by electricity. Considering that the first combustion engine car was built in 1876, and this technology, of course after many modifications and improvements, still serves drivers around the world, the changes that have occurred over the last decade are truly revolutionary.

EV Charging Stations are sprouting up like mushrooms after the rain, and increasingly modern models of “electric cars” are powered by energy-efficient and increasingly capacious batteries.

The development of electromobility has meant that electric cars can now be found in almost every corner of the world, and their users (accustomed to the freedom of refueling at common gas stations) want to “fill up the empty tank” and continue their journey as quickly as possible.

Therefore, in order for electric cars not to lag behind their combustion counterparts, it was only natural for charging stations to face the significant challenge of charging vehicles in the shortest possible time while maintaining the required safety for both the user and the charged battery.

Taking on the responsibility of satisfying extremely demanding customers and meeting high goals, the manufacturer of high-quality electronic components, Omron, decided to prepare a solution that will support the development of chargers dedicated for electric vehicles, significantly raising current standards.

G9KC, the highest global standards in a Japanese, compact solution

G9KC, a 4-pole, 40-ampere PCB power relay, is one of the latest achievements of one of the leaders in the electronic components industry. The manufacturer also anticipated a solution with an additional, optional auxiliary contact type B. Then, the product name includes an additional suffix “1B”.

What distinguishes this solution from its market counterparts? According to the manufacturer’s assurances, this relay is characterized by lower contact resistance, which translates into a reduction in the temperature inside the device housing.

The reduced temperature also positively affects the lifespan of other electronic components located in the immediate vicinity.

Until now, thermics has been a significant limitation when it comes to available charging power. The Omron relay allows for powering an electric car using a power of 22kW.

An extremely important advantage is the possibility of mounting the product on a printed circuit board (PCB).

Such a solution minimizes the size of the charging station and reduces costs. Serial production of PCBs equipped with G9KC relays allows for achieving the highest quality of execution and speeding up the entire production process.

The manufacturer guarantees the highest quality, meeting global standards, which confirms compliance with IEC standards in the field of electric vehicle charging solutions (IEC 61851-1, IEC62955). The solution with an auxiliary contact also meets the IEC 60947-4-1, F.7.2 standard.

It should also be emphasized that G9KC is certified by UL/C-UL, TUV, and CQC in terms of safety of relay use.

Characteristics of G9KC relays

The TME catalog includes four models of Omron G9KC relays. These are basic versions and those equipped with an additional auxiliary contact, with 12 and 24V nominal coil voltage.

Apart from the differences resulting from the type of coil used, i.e., resistance, current, and power consumption by the coil, the entire series of relays is characterized by the following technical parameters:

  • Maximum contact current: 40A;
  • Operating temperature: -40 to 85°C;
  • External dimensions: 58.5×35.5×47.5mm;

Technical parameters depending on the coil voltage:

  • Coil resistance:
    • for the 12V version: 28.8?;
    • for the 24V version: 115?;
  • Coil current:
    • for the 12V version: 417mA;
    • for the 24V version: 208mA;
  • Power consumption by the coil:
    • for the 12V version: 5W;
    • for the 24V version: 613mW.

As mentioned above, the G9KC relay finds its application in 3-phase charging stations for electric vehicles, but it is also suitable for other applications using 3-phase alternating current power. These can include emergency UPS power supplies, inverters for photovoltaic installations, or industrial inverters.

The high quality of products offered by Omron has allowed building a brand that inspires immense trust among customers.

Relays from the new G9KC series represent the highest global shelf – in terms of quality, durability, and efficiency, they will certainly perform well in all, even the most demanding applications.

By purchasing G9KC relays, the user receives a guarantee of safety of use both for themselves and for the entire installation that cooperates with the aforementioned relays.
