The Complementary Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (CPNT) Action Plan Rapid Phase II of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded VIAVI Solutions. At the VIAVI Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR) and the Open RAN Center for Integration and Deployment (ORCID) labs, VIAVI will integrate and test its SecureTime altGNSS GEO-L service and SecurePNT 6200 resilient timing solution.

The Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund (PWSCIF) of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) provides funding for VALOR and ORCID.
The need for a robust Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) ecosystem that can operate in denied, degraded, and disrupted space operational environments (D3SOE) is underscored by the recent sharp rise in GPS/GNSS signal interference incidents, such as jamming and spoofing.
In addition to GPS/GNSS, VIAVI’s SecureTime GEO-L service and SecurePNT-6260 transition to a fully GPS independent GEO-L satellite-based time service and a precise holdover clock in the event of spoofing or jamming without causing any disruption to the critical infrastructure system.
In order to provide precise timing services to vital infrastructure, such as data centers, financial systems, power grids, and cellular networks, the DOT CPNT Action Plan seeks to test solutions that supplement or replace GPS/GNSS.
In order to safeguard the country’s vital infrastructure, CPNT services will be widely adopted with the help of data from the VALOR, ORCID, and field testing.
The VIAVI GEO-L service and user equipment will be evaluated in an upcoming government field test event that offers live-sky jamming and spoofing of GPS/GNSS, in addition to integration and testing at the VALOR and ORCID laboratories.
Leadership Comments
“We are thrilled to support the DOT CPNT Action Plan and demonstrate an exciting new element of our assured PNT portfolio,” said Doug Russell, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Aerospace and Defense, VIAVI. “Integration and testing at the VALOR and ORCID labs demonstrate the technology’s readiness in an operational critical infrastructure environment. We look forward to partnering with DOT and NTIA to improve resilience for critical infrastructure and providing vital data to support widespread CPNT adoption.”
