EQONIC Group has confirmed that its proprietary composite is built around aluminium, with no lithium, sodium or rare earths involved a detail that defines both the chemistry and the architecture of the technology.
The company says it is now moving the platform towards industrial validation, a key step that will test whether the material can be manufactured reliably at scale and perform as expected in commercial settings.
EQONIC says the technology is designed to bring material costs down to around 30% of those associated with traditional lithium metal batteries, while targeting a manufactured cost of £50/kWh at scale.
Aluminium’s is one of the most abundant metals in the earth’s crust and is supported by well-established supply chains. That stands in contrast to lithium, sodium and rare earth materials, which are more exposed to price swings, geopolitical pressure and export restrictions.

The confirmation follows a series of announcements earlier this year that point to EQONIC’s broader push from early-stage development towards commercialisation.
In February 2026, the company expanded its senior leadership team with the appointment of John Saunders as Executive Director. Saunders brings 30 years of banking, regulatory and legal experience from roles at Coutts, Barclays, UBS, Monument Bank and Deutsche Bank, and will support EQONIC’s commercial partnership and licensing strategy.
Around the same time, EQONIC also named Angela Knight CBE as Non-Executive Director, adding FTSE governance experience from positions including Taylor Wimpey, Arbuthnot Banking Group and the British Bankers’ Association.
In May 2026, the company announced a strategic collaboration with the Barton Knight Group, a NICEIC-approved electrical contractor, to create a long-term framework for supplying, installing and maintaining battery storage and renewable energy systems for customers across the UK.
Then in June 2026, EQONIC was selected for the UK Government’s £452 million Battery Innovation Programme, delivered by Innovate UK and supported by the Department for Business and Trade, to accelerate development of a full-stack digital twin of its manufacturing process.
