Montage Technology has entered trial production of its CXL 3.2 MXC Chip, positioning it as a solution to growing memory bottlenecks in AI, cloud, and data center workloads.

The MXC chip is built on the CXL 3.2 standard and complies with Type 3 specifications, supporting both CXL.mem and CXL.io protocols. With PCIe 6.x integration, it delivers data transfer speeds of up to 64 GT/s, while dual DDR5 memory controllers enable support for memory speeds of up to 8000 MT/s.
At its core, the chip translates host-side CXL memory requests into DDR commands in real time, allowing more efficient communication between processors and memory. This architecture helps overcome traditional server memory capacity limitations while improving overall resource utilization.
Montage has also integrated key subsystems directly into the chip, including PCIe 6.x PHY, DDR5 PHY, and dual RISC-V processor cores, along with a full suite of management interfaces. The MXC supports multiple deployment formats such as PCIe add-in cards and EDSFF modules, enabling use cases like memory expansion, pooling, and tiered memory architectures.
To support deployment, the company is offering a complete software development kit (SDK) along with testing and analysis tools, aimed at accelerating product development and validation.
The MXC has already been adopted in early-stage products by major memory players including Samsung and SK hynix, with initial validation completed.
Montage says the solution is designed for compatibility with leading server platforms such as Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC processors, ensuring broad interoperability across modern data center environments.
Leadership Comment
“The trial production of the CXL 3.2 Memory eXpander Controller (MXC) chip marks an important milestone in Montage Technology’s pursuit of CXL innovation and commercialization,” said Stephen Tai, President at Montage Technology. “As memory demands continue to surge in the AI era, we are providing our customers with high-bandwidth, large-capacity, and highly reliable memory expansion solutions, accelerating the large-scale adoption of CXL in data center and AI infrastructure.”
