New Electrostatic Shielding Eliminates Noise in Dense High Power Designs

A new variant of Pickering Electronics’ Series 144 high power reed relays, which stack on a compact 0.25-inch pitch and switch up to 80 Watts, adds an electrostatic shield between the switch and the coil to reduce noise. Noise that may otherwise occur between the coil drive and high voltage circuits is prevented via electrostatic screening.

Pickering’s internal mu-metal screen, which helps prevent issues caused by magnetic interaction when devices are closely stacked, is complemented by this new screening option.

As Dry Reed Relays, Series 144 high power reed relays Offers:

  • Eco-friendlier option than mercury-wetted reed relays.
  • Also provides a superior alternative to electromechanical relays (EMRs), where its low-level performance and high isolation significantly improve efficiency and reliability.
  • And compared to EMRs, reed relays deliver faster switching speeds and longer mechanical lifespans, further enhancing their appeal.
  • 1 Form A, 2 Form A and 1 Form B configurations are available, with 5 V, 12 V or 24 V coils offered, all with optional internal diode protection.
  • Build options are also available on request, including many pin configurations.
  • Pickering also offers customised load testing to ensure components meet exact specifications and needs.

Although some applications require higher switching power and higher carry current specifications, miniature, ultra-high packing density reed relays typically have a switching rating of up to 10 Watts and 0.5 amps.

The Series 144, Pickering’s smallest miniature SIP reed relay with a power rating of up to 80 Watts, is a great option when both high-power and low-level switching capabilities are needed because it combines the capacity to switch higher power with outstanding low-level performance.

Mixed signal semiconductor testers, photovoltaic and EV charging, mining gas analysis, medical electronics, in-circuit test equipment, and high voltage instrumentation are examples of suitable applications.

Pickering’s reputation for innovative reed relays stems from decades of superior production. In addition to formerless coil construction and the company’s patented SoftCenter technology, which enhances mechanical durability, all relays feature instrumentation-grade reed switches for stable, long-life operation, up to billions of cycles.

High packing densities with little magnetic interference are made possible by internal or external mu-metal screening, and each relay is thoroughly tested to guarantee constant quality, including dynamic contact wave-shape analysis.

“The Series 144 high power SIP (single-in-line-package) reed relays offer a switching current of up to 2 Amps, delivering up to 60 Watts, or 1 Amp for up to 80 Watts, with a continuous carry current of up to 3 Amps,” said Robert King, Reed Relays Product Manager at Pickering Electronics. “They also boast high-voltage capability, with a switching voltage of 1000VDC up to 10W and up to 3kV stand-off – and adding the option of an electrostatic shield to minimize noise between the signal and control circuitry provides extra protection where required.”
