Universal Microelectronics Opts Infineon CoolGaN For its Network PoE

Universal Microelectronics opted CoolGaN power transistors from Infineon Technologies for its new 250 W adapter for Power over Ethernet (PoE) networking applications. Reliable, high-performance solutions are made possible by Infineon’s CoolGaN transistors, which also assist UMEC in developing safer and more energy-efficient technologies to tackle the problems of the modern power system.Infineon CoolGaN power transistors for UMEC 250 W Adapter

Telecommunications, industrial electronics, consumer electronics, and medical technology are just a few of the industries that benefit greatly from these solutions for power electronics.

Higher efficiency is achieved via GaN-based power devices, which use less energy and produce less heat. For instance, they can function at greater frequencies and power densities, allowing for more compact designs, optimizing the use of rack space, and enhancing cooling in AI data centers.

Additionally, a smaller system size enables better airflow and greater hardware content, which reduces heat waste and, ultimately, operating expenses and the carbon footprint.

The exceptional 95% efficiency and approximately 39% increase in power density are provided by UMEC’s 250 W adaptor. Compact and high-density power supplies require improved thermal behavior, reduced power losses, and switching at rates higher than 200 kHz, all of which are made possible by CoolGaN transistors.

These are significant advancements in the global virtual networking market, which is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.5 percent from $48.6 billion in 2024 to over $200 billion by 2030.

Gallium nitride power transistors from Infineon are facilitating high-frequency operation, boosting efficiency, and decreasing system size in a variety of applications, all while propelling digitalization and decarbonization. They come in a wide range of packaging and voltage classes ranging from 60 V to 700 V.
