This strategic appointment aims to enhance the operational efficiency of the upcoming ?27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Jagiroad, Assam.

Strategic Leadership Appointment

Tim McIntosh brings over 34 years of experience from Intel, where he last served as the Advanced Packaging Factory General Manager.

His expertise in semiconductor packaging and manufacturing is expected to be instrumental in establishing TSAT as a leading player in the industry.Tata Electronics Appoints Intel Veteran Tim McIntosh to Lead Assam Semiconductor Plant the volt post

Tata Electronics is actively recruiting experienced professionals, particularly from Southeast Asia, to build a robust team for its new operations in India. Hiring drives have been organized in Malaysia and Singapore, regions known for their significant contributions to the global semiconductor industry.

Assam’s Semiconductor Ambitions

The semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, Assam, is poised to be a game-changer for the region. With an investment of ?27,000 crore, the plant is expected to produce 48 million chips per day, catering to sectors like automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has lauded the project, stating, “The Tata Group has taken a huge leap of faith by investing in Assam’s future, and their decision will encourage several other investors to come to our state.”

The facility is being set up on the site of the closed Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited, symbolizing a transformation from a “dark chapter in Assam’s industrial history” to a beacon of technological advancement.Tata Electronics Appoints Intel Veteran Tim McIntosh to Lead Assam Semiconductor Plant the volt post 2

Skill Development and Employment Opportunities

A key component of the project is the establishment of a Skill Development Centre within the premises of the semiconductor facility.

This center aims to empower youth from the Northeast by offering courses in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and electronics, thereby facilitating employment opportunities in the Jagiroad plant.

Already, 1,500 youth from Assam, predominantly women, are undergoing training at Tata facility centers in and around Bengaluru. These trained professionals are expected to take on leadership roles once the semiconductor facility becomes operational in 2025.

National and Global Significance

The Jagiroad semiconductor plant aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a major global chipmaker. The project received central government approval in March and is anticipated to be completed by April 2025.

Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This new development will put Assam on the global map.”

The facility’s establishment is expected to catalyze the development of a semiconductor ecosystem in the region, attracting ancillary industries and fostering innovation-driven growth.

The appointment of Tim McIntosh and the development of the semiconductor facility in Assam mark a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing. With strategic leadership, robust infrastructure, and a focus on skill development, the project is set to transform Assam into a significant player in the global semiconductor industry.
