Can HiSilicon CIS Launch Challenge Sony in Smartphone Race

Huawei’s semiconductor arm, HiSilicon, has taken a major step forward in imaging technology by introducing its first fully self-developed CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) chip. This milestone marks China’s growing independence in high-performance camera tech, targeting smartphones, surveillance, and consumer devices with domestic manufacturing from the ground up.

The flagship sensor leads with a 50MP 1/1.3-inch RYYB Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) HDR design, optimized for superior low-light capture and dynamic range.

The company’s new lineup now spans multiple sizes including 1-inch, 1/1.56-inch, and 1/2.5-inch variants all at 50MP resolution for mainstream mobile applications. Paired with the Hi3519DV500 4K AI ISP processor, it supports 4K at 50fps and 1080p at 120fps, blending advanced optics with on-chip intelligence.

Industry watchers point to HiSilicon‘s edge in full-stack integration, from sensor fabrication to AI processing, using China-based processes that sidestep global supply constraints. This comes amid Huawei’s push for self-reliance, following successes in Kirin SoCs and Ascend AI accelerators.

The timing aligns with surging demand for AI-enhanced imaging in premium handsets and security cams. While Sony and Samsung dominate high-end CIS, HiSilicon’s affordable, domestically produced alternatives could capture significant share in Asia-Pacific markets, especially as Huawei’s Mate and Pura series integrate these chips.
