AI workloads are completely rewriting the rules for data center power. With GPU performance spiking and rack densities pushing the limits, the industry is rapidly shifting toward 800 VDC or ±400 VDC architectures. To keep pace, Infineon Technologies has rolled out a new 27kW three-phase power supply unit (PSU) reference design built specifically for server ODMs and OEMs.

Engineered to meet OCP Open Rack V3 (ORV3) specifications, the design is a heavy hitter for modern AI server racks. Under the hood, it’s packed with Infineon’s proprietary silicon including 650V CoolSiC and CoolMOS MOSFETs, EiceDRIVER gate drivers, XENSIV current sensors, and PSOC microcontrollers.
The result is a peak efficiency north of 98 percent at an input voltage of 480 VAC and a 50 percent load. It also brings some serious power density to the table, hitting 116 W/in³ to comfortably clear the ORV3 baseline requirement of 94 W/in³.
The architecture relies on a five-level ANPC PFC topology paired with a three-level LLC converter. One of the smartest design choices is the integrated energy buffer, which delivers a 20-millisecond hold-up time to ride out short grid disturbances.
Crucially for AI applications, it smooths out the line voltage during aggressive GPU load transients, completely eliminating the need for a bulky, separate capacitor bank unit (CBU). Infineon also utilized an integrated planar magnetic structure to keep the high-frequency transformer design compact, modular, and scalable.
Handling the brutal load transients of AI requires fast, precise control, which is why both the PFC and LLC stages are entirely digital. Infineon leveraged its PSOC Control C3 Performance Line microcontroller, using an integrated programmable power control accelerator (PPCA) to lock in tight current and voltage regulation with rapid dynamic response.
Built to support a three-phase input range of 311 to 528 VAC, the PSU is well-suited for global grid standards. It maintains a power factor above 0.99 and low input-current total harmonic distortion across the vast majority of its load range, operating reliably in ambient temperatures from -5°C up to 45°C.
