Mitsubishi Electric’s Factory Automation Systems Group recently brought together top engineering minds from across Asia for the MECA Frontier Forum 2026. Held on September 1, the event served as the grand stage for the MECA Cup Global Finals 2026, putting young talent to the test with real-world factory automation challenges.

As part of Mitsubishi Electric’s educational support initiative (MECA) which bridges academic innovation with industrial application, the event gave participants a chance to tour a working factory, network with peers, and showcase cutting-edge problem-solving skills.
Hajime Sugiyama, Deputy General Manager of Business Planning at Nagoya Works, kicked off the event by emphasizing the program’s vital role in nurturing the next wave of engineering talent.
Global Teams Tackle Real-World Challenges
Seven regional teams representing India, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam earned their spots in the global finals after winning tough regional qualifiers.
During the finals, each team faced a rigorous evaluation process featuring a 15-minute presentation and a 10-minute Q&A session, judged on creativity and practical feasibility.
Teams tackled fascinating, region-specific industrial hurdles:
- India: An intelligent PLC programming assistant.
- Japan: Automated indoor large-tomato cultivation.
- South Korea: COG-based truck load optimization.
- The Philippines: A specialized coffee cherry sorter.
- Taiwan: An autonomous decision system for metalworking.
- Thailand: AI integration in surfactant manufacturing.
- Vietnam: An autonomous indoor medical drug delivery robot.
India Takes Home the Global Crown
Representing Mitsubishi Electric India, the team from Sona College of Technology clinched the winning title with their standout project, “Intelligent PLC Programming Assistant for Mitsubishi Electric Automation.”
Their innovative system relies on a dual-layer AI architecture with natural language processing to simplify PLC programming. Judges heavily praised the project for its seamless blend of standard code generation, virtual-and-physical validation, and exceptional scalability.
Mitsubishi Electric plans to continue expanding the MECA initiative worldwide, helping students build essential systems integration skills and an international outlook as they step into future manufacturing careers.
