The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) have signed a five-year agreement to establish an End-to-End Optical Network Test Bed at C-DOT’s campus in New Delhi.
The facility, supported and funded by DoT, is aimed at giving Indian startups, researchers and industry players access to a real-world environment where indigenous optical communication technologies can be tested, validated and prepared for commercial deployment.
The initiative is expected to help close the gap between technologies developed in laboratories and solutions that are ready for market and field deployment.
Test bed to support indigenous optical technologies
The new facility will bring together C-DOT’s technologies across optical core, optical access and Quantum Security with advanced third-party test and measurement equipment.
This setup will allow companies and technology developers to evaluate their solutions in an end-to-end optical networking environment before moving towards wider deployment.
For startups in particular, access to such infrastructure can help reduce the challenges involved in testing emerging technologies and provide a pathway towards validation and commercialisation.
The facility will also serve as a shared national resource for testing, innovation and technical development, extending its benefits beyond established telecom companies.
Focus on skills, research and industry collaboration
Along with technology validation, the test bed will provide hands-on learning opportunities for students, researchers and telecom professionals.
Participants will be able to gain practical exposure to optical networking technologies and next-generation telecom infrastructure. The initiative is expected to support research and strengthen the pool of skilled professionals needed to develop and deploy advanced communication networks in India.
By bringing academia, startups, researchers and industry closer to a common testing environment, the facility could also encourage greater collaboration around indigenous telecom technologies.
Project to be developed in two phases
The project will be implemented over two phases during the five-year agreement. The first two years will focus primarily on establishing the required infrastructure. This will include systems covering optical core, optical access and quantum security.
The remaining three years will focus on operating and maintaining the facility, providing technical support to users and conducting educational and outreach programmes.
This phased approach is intended to ensure that the test bed evolves from an infrastructure development project into a long-term platform for technology testing, skills development and industry support.
Strengthening India’s telecom technology ecosystem
The initiative comes as India continues to expand its focus on developing and deploying indigenous telecommunications technologies.
By providing startups and industry with access to testing and validation infrastructure, the DoT and C-DOT initiative could help promising optical communication technologies progress more quickly from research and development to commercially viable products.
The test bed is also aligned with the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat objective of building secure and self-reliant telecom infrastructure within the country.
