Ahead of the International Suppliers Fair (IZB) in Wolfsburg, Volkswagen Group and NXP Semiconductors have forged a strategic partnership that lays the physical groundwork for VW’s next generation of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

At the core of the deal is NXP’s S32K5 family of microcontrollers, which will serve as the backbone for a new zonal architecture spanning all VW brands and vehicle segments. The first cars riding on this revamped platform are slated to hit the road in 2027.
The automotive industry is currently hitting a wall with traditional electronic control units (ECUs). As cars take on more digital features, managing dozens of isolated ECUs creates a massive bottleneck for development, complicates the supply chain, and severely limits scalability.
VW’s shift to a zonal architecture tackles this hardware bloat head-on by using high-performance microcontrollers to consolidate multiple discrete functions into just a few centralized hubs.
Here is how the architecture breaks down:
- While heavy-hitting central processors handle the high-level AI computing for things like automated driving and complex infotainment, the S32K5 MCUs act as the critical nerve centers at the edge.
- They serve as the core processors of the zonal controllers, directly connecting to sensors and actuators to manage the chassis, safety systems, lighting, and body comfort.
- Essentially, they organize and process regional vehicle data so the central computing platform has the foundation it needs to run complex AI algorithms seamlessly.
This hardware consolidation is a massive leap forward in reducing complexity. Crucially, these NXP chips will act as a common building block for the upcoming zonal SDV architecture being developed by RV Tech, the newly formed joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian.
This means the underlying hardware and architecture will scale across both automakers’ global lineups, while still allowing them to deliver highly distinct, brand-specific user experiences.
Zooming out, this partnership is a textbook execution of Volkswagen’s broader semiconductor strategy. By bypassing the traditional layered supply chain and locking in direct, long-term deals with leading chipmakers like NXP, VW is actively blending its automotive expertise with cutting-edge silicon.
It is a calculated move to secure supply resilience, build hardware synergies across its global brands, and drive the automaker’s “Target Picture 2030” goals by shaping the exact technologies that will define its future fleets.
Leadership Comments
Karsten Schnake, Member of the Extended Executive Committee and Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Procurement, said: “Semiconductors are strategic technology for the automotive industry. Over the past years, we have systematically expanded our technology ecosystem and built partnerships with leading companies across the value chain. Our partnership with NXP is another step in this journey, showing how Volkswagen Group is taking a more active role in the semiconductor value chain: defining our technology needs early, leveraging our scale across brands and creating greater long-term planning certainty for both sides.”
Werner Tietz, Member of the Extended Volkswagen Group Executive Committee responsible for Group Research and Development, said: “Our future zonal architecture, developed by RV Tech and supported by strategic technology partners such as NXP, creates a scalable technology foundation for multiple Group brands and vehicle segments. By harmonizing key technologies across the Group, we reduce complexity, leverage scale and accelerate innovation while enabling advanced digital capabilities. This allows us to bring digital innovations to our customers faster and continuously enhance our vehicles throughout their lifecycle.”
Rafael Sotomayor, President and CEO at NXP Semiconductors, said: ”Intelligent, software-defined vehicles must operate safely, securely and reliably. Together with Volkswagen Group and RV Tech, NXP is bringing scalable real-time compute, trusted edge intelligence and continuous software innovation together to create a scalable foundation for the next generation of intelligent vehicles.”
Lars Reger, Executive Vice President and CTO at NXP Semiconductors, said: “Software-defined differentiation is the new auto benchmark, and NXP is excited that the S32K5 family of MCUs has been adopted into RV Tech’s innovative new zonal architecture, one of the most sophisticated approaches to streamlined development and differentiating features in the automotive industry today. As a core processor for the vehicle’s zonal controllers, S32K5 is built for safe real-time compute, fast and secure OTA updates and the consolidation of functions that together create a basis for a flexible, continuously updateable vehicle.”
