Avnet Silica has released its Q3 2026 Trendliner report with a more optimistic view of the semiconductor market even as supply chain constraints continue to bite. The latest edition values the global semiconductor market at $454 billion, up from the previous forecast of $433 billion, and projects 10.8 percent growth into 2027.

Stronger Growth Forecast Amid Tight Supply
The upgraded outlook reflects improving demand conditions across key end markets, driven by AI infrastructure buildouts, automotive electrification, and industrial digitalization. At the same time, the report flags ongoing supply challenges that are keeping lead times extended and pricing under pressure in several component categories.
Memory remains a particular pinch point. Industry commentary from Avnet’s recent earnings calls notes that memory constraints are limiting the ability to fulfill complete system builds, with price inflation now spreading beyond DRAM and NAND into other semiconductor and IP&E commodities.
Advanced packaging capacity is another bottleneck, with equipment lead times for CoWoS and related technologies stretching into 2027 and 2028.
Market Dynamics and Segment Pressures
The Trendliner analysis aligns with broader 2026 market signals showing record monthly semiconductor sales but uneven capacity availability.
High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is absorbing a growing share of wafer capacity, with SK Hynix’s entire 2026 HBM output already committed and most 2027 allocations locked in.
Because HBM occupies two to three times more wafer area than standard DRAM of equivalent density, mainstream DDR4 and DDR5 supply is being squeezed.
Other tight segments include high-end MLCCs, where capacity expansion cycles of 18 to 24 months are limiting new supply through 2027, and silicon carbide (SiC) power devices, which remain centered on slower-ramping 6-inch lines.
Advanced packaging shortages are expected to persist until at least 2028, while DRAM supply-demand imbalances are projected to widen further in 2027.
Implications for Designers and Distributors
For system designers and OEMs, the message from Avnet Silica’s latest report is clear. Demand is strengthening, but supply will not catch up quickly.
Strategic inventory planning, early engagement with distribution partners, and flexible component selection will be critical to navigating the next 12 to 18 months.
