Mass Production Begins of Murata’s Record-Breaking Micro RF Connectors

THE VOLT VOTES

Murata has officially kicked off mass production for its new SWL series (the MM8330-2600RJ5 and RK20), taking the title for the world’s smallest RF/microwave coaxial switch connectors.

Coming in at a microscopic 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.55 mm, these connectors cuts down about 40% off the PCB mounting area compared to the older SWJ series.

But the real space savings happen when you pair them with Murata’s dedicated probes, the total footprint, keep-out area included, drops by nearly 60%.

Freeing Up Crucial Board Space

Anyone designing wireless hardware knows that board space is at a massive premium right now. As devices get smarter and component counts rise, routing everything is a constant struggle.

RF test connectors are notoriously greedy in this regard because they don’t just take up mounting space; they demand a wide clearance zone for probe access during testing.Mass production of new SWL series started by Murata The Volt Post1

Murata tackled this bottleneck by rethinking the connector’s internal structure, leaning on their combined RF and mechanical design expertise.

They managed to shrink the hardware from the SWJ’s 1.4 x 1.2 x 0.65 mm down to 1.0 x 1.0 x 0.55 mm without sacrificing durability or bumping up RF transmission loss.

Because the new design requires significantly less clearance around the test point, it opens up a lot of much-needed flexibility for component placement.

(Note: The dedicated manual and automatic probes that maximize these space savings are slated for mass production in December 2026.)

The Specs: DC to 15 GHz

Performance-wise, the SWL series handles frequencies from DC up to 15 GHz with a standard 50 ? impedance. Depending on your manufacturing scale, you can get the RJ5 variant on reels of 5,000 pieces, or scale up to the RK20 on 20,000-piece reels.Mass production of new SWL series started by Murata The Volt Post2

Ultimately, this is exactly the kind of hardware the industry needs to keep pushing the envelope on ultra-compact, high-performance smartphones and wearables.

It’s a smart step forward in helping engineers squeeze the most out of every square millimeter of PCB real estate.
