Littelfuse has introduced the TP5.0SMD-FL and TP1KSMB-FL Series FlatSuppressX™ TVS Diodes, expanding its portfolio of transient voltage suppression devices for 48 V automotive electronics. The new devices are designed to protect sensitive circuits from transient overvoltage events while maintaining ultra-low, stable clamping performance.

Developed for next-generation 48 V vehicle architectures and aligned with ISO 21780 requirements, the new TVS diodes target one of the key challenges facing automotive designers: protecting ICs such as DC/DC converters and gate drivers without pushing them beyond their absolute maximum ratings.
The TP5.0SMD-FL Series offers up to 5000 W peak pulse power capability in a DO-214AB (SMC) package, while the TP1KSMB-FL Series delivers 1000 W in a compact DO-214AA (SMB) package. Both series are AEC-Q101 qualified and intended for high-reliability automotive applications.
At the center of the devices is Littelfuse’s proprietary FlatSuppressX™ technology, which is engineered to deliver a flatter clamping characteristic and significantly lower clamping voltage than conventional TVS devices.
The company said the technology helps reduce system stress and may allow designers to use lower voltage-rated downstream components, improving design flexibility and lowering overall bill-of-materials cost.
Unlike traditional TVS devices, which can show higher and more variable clamping voltages during transient events, FlatSuppressX™ devices use an advanced foldback/snapback I-V characteristic to tightly control transient response while avoiding latch-up risk.
This near-constant clamping behavior is designed to support fast transient and high-energy surge protection in demanding automotive environments.
The devices are aimed at protecting I/O interfaces, power buses, and other vulnerable circuits across 48 V automotive systems. Target applications include Battery Disconnect Units, Zone Control Units, Electric Power Steering systems, DC/DC converters, and power distribution networks.
Key features include high surge capability of 5 kW for the TP5.0SMD-FL Series and 1 kW for the TP1KSMB-FL Series, ISO 21780 alignment for 48 V automotive system protection, AEC-Q101 qualification, fast response time typically below 1 ps, and low-profile surface-mount packaging to help optimize PCB space.
By combining high surge capability with low, stable clamping voltage, the TP5.0SMD-FL and TP1KSMB-FL Series are positioned to help engineers build more robust, efficient, and cost-effective 48 V automotive electronics platforms.
Leadership Comment
“The key advantage of FlatSuppressX™ technology is its ability to deliver extremely low and stable clamping voltage in 48 V systems,” said Charlie Cai, Director of Product Management, Protection Business, Littelfuse. “This allows engineers to protect sensitive ICs better while meeting ISO 21780 requirements and reducing total system cost without latch-up risk.”
