In order to comply with the stringent new, globally harmonized vehicle-emission tests, automakers can expand the capabilities of mild-hybrid systems, such as integrated starter generators, expanding electric-drive modes, and improving energy recovery, due to the 48V powernet.

The e-compressor, pumps, fans, and valves are examples of extra significant loads that can be powered at 48V to increase total electrical efficiency and reduce vehicle weight.

ST’s L98GD8 Driver Assists The Transition, As An Integrated Solution Optimized For:

  • Driving the gates of NMOS or PMOS FETs in 48V-powered systems,
  • Flaunts eight independent, configurable outputs,
  • A single driver IC controls MOSFETs connected as individual power switches or as high-side and low-side switches in up to two H-bridges for DC-motor driving.
  • Provides peak-and-hold control for electrically operated valves.
  • The gate current is programmable, helping engineers minimize MOSFET switching noise to meet electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations.

The L98GD8 Driver is automotive-qualified and equipped with per-channel diagnostics for short-circuit to battery, open-load, and short-to-ground faults to satisfy the industry’s rigorous safety and reliability requirements.

Logic built-in self-test (BIST), hardware self-check (HWSC) for over-/under-voltage monitoring, and a programmable communication check (CC) watchdog timer are further diagnostic features.

Additionally, there is an ADC for monitoring battery and die temperature, H-bridge current limiting, battery-undervoltage monitoring, and an ultrafast overcurrent shutdown with dual redundant failsafe pins.

The L98GD8 is in production now, in a 10mm x 10mm TQFP64 package. Budgetary pricing starts at $3.94 for orders of 1000 pieces.
