GlobalFoundries has officially closed its acquisition of MIPS, a move that expands the company’s reach into processor IP and reinforces its role in AI, edge computing, automotive, and industrial markets.
GlobalFoundries acquires MIPS, combines GlobalFoundries’ global semiconductor manufacturing expertise with MIPS’ long-standing processor design heritage, now centered on RISC-V-based architectures. With this integration, GlobalFoundries becomes one of the first pure-play foundries to directly offer compute IP alongside its process technologies.
With GlobalFoundries acquires MIPS, MIPS will continue to function as an independent entity. It will maintain its licensing model, serving existing customers and partners, while benefiting from GlobalFoundries’ scale and manufacturing ecosystem.
By pairing advanced manufacturing with proven processor IP, GlobalFoundries is positioning itself to offer faster, more complete solutions for clients working in AI and high-performance computing. The deal underscores the growing demand for RISC-V solutions, especially in markets looking for alternatives to traditional architectures.
A Shift into Full Chip Design
GlobalFoundries has emphasized that its foundry-only model remains intact. Rather than signaling a shift into full chip design, this acquisition adds another layer of value for its customers.
The company now stands to offer a broader platform for innovation at a time when compute demand is accelerating worldwide.
