ST’s New 6-Axis Sensors Derives ‘Event Reconstruction’

THE VOLT VOTES

STMicroelectronics accelerates new innovation in motion sensing with a new lineup of miniature chips that can actually figure out how an event happened.

The company has rolled out a new pair of ultra-precise 6-axis motion sensors or inertial measurement units (IMUs) that combine high-end movement tracking with strict eco-friendly manufacturing standards.

These aren’t your average motion trackers. Under the hood, the consumer-focused LSM6DSK320X and industrial-grade ISM6HGK256X feature an advanced “super-symmetric” gyroscope and a highly precise accelerometer. In simple words, they can track a massive range of dynamic movement with incredible accuracy.

This upgraded hardware powers a feature called “event reconstruction.” Instead of just recognizing that a device moved, these smart sensors can distinguish between specific types of incidents.

In the real world, this means fitness trackers that can detect concussions, smart tags that send better accident alerts, and tools that monitor their own usage. It’s also a major win for robotics and aviation, allowing for smoother drone-flight stabilization, better structural monitoring, and even training robots to learn new tasks.

You can expect to see these new sensors popping up in everyday consumer gear like game controllers and smart tags, right alongside heavy-duty professional tools like agricultural surveying drones.

To top it off, the new IMUs are rolling out as part of the ST Sustainable Technology initiative, meaning this massive boost in tracking precision comes wrapped in responsible, sustainable product development.

Leadership Comment

“By maximizing the signal strength and resilience in an extremely compact form factor, the architecture of our latest 6-axis motion sensors will drive powerful new features in smart applications,” said Simone Ferri, Executive Vice President, MEMS Sub-Group, STMicroelectronics. “Moreover, meeting today’s leading sustainable-materials codes such as BPA-free, Pb-free and others helps smart-tech innovators address environmental and regulatory expectations as these become progressively tougher, encompassing additional classes of materials.”

ST new motion sensing, ultra-precise 6-axis sensors IMUs The Volt Post“ST’s new LSM6DSK320X sensor delivers unprecedented vibration immunity that we just had to integrate and take advantage of immediately in our ongoing reference platform development,” said Jay Blackman, Leader, Betaflight.

“The LSM6DSK320X IMU is the new performance leader for smart and context-aware consumer technology, including UAVs,” said Dr. Zebo Zhou, Chief Technology Officer, Tianhe (Chengdu). “Drone flight controllers place extremely demanding requirements on an IMU: the sensor must not saturate during aggressive maneuvers, must maintain low noise under severe vibrations, and must be compact and power efficient. Of all the available devices we have evaluated, ST’s LSM6DSK320X was the best match.”
