H2 Core Systems Scales Hydrogen Innovation with Siemens

THE VOLT VOTES

Siemens has announced that H2 Core Systems, a startup focused on modular hydrogen energy systems, is using the Siemens Xcelerator platform and its software and automation portfolio to design and manufacture compact, highly efficient systems that generate and store clean energy exactly where it’s needed.

H2 Core Systems relies on Siemens’ Designcenter X Solid Edge software as the foundation of its fully digital product development process. This allows the team to design and visualize products in 3D before physical production begins.

The digital workflow has helped cut production time by 50 percent, reduce design and customization cycles by 20 percent, and drive overall growth of 70 percent.

Combined with the cloud-based collaboration features of Siemens’ Teamcenter Share app, the setup also helps the team create marketing materials, technical documentation, and clearer explanations of complex design ideas for customers and stakeholders.

The company also uses Siemens automation hardware and software, including S7 1200 compact programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and TIA Portal, to develop and manage the automation needed for its advanced systems.

Founded in 2019 and based in Heide, Germany, H2 Core Systems develops, manufactures, and maintains modular production, storage, and energy systems that combine electrolysis, storage, compression, fuel cells, and other elements of a hydrogen ecosystem.

Built to be flexible, expandable, and scalable, these systems can work alongside photovoltaic or wind power and are well suited for decentralized, self-sufficient, and green energy supply models used around the world.

One recent project saw H2 Core Systems design and build a fully autonomous energy system for a school in Niger. The result is an independent, emission-free power supply that uses solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

The green hydrogen is stored and later converted back into electricity when needed, creating a reliable energy source without diesel, unstable grids, or long fossil fuel supply chains.

“In our role as an accelerator of the energy transition, we need to respond to individual requirements promptly and with modular, scalable energy systems,” said Ulf Jörgensen, chief executive officer, H2 Core Systems. “This acceleration is based on fully digitalized, dynamic and efficient collaboration between sales, engineering, production and documentation. Siemens Xcelerator enables this collaboration and significantly reduces our time-to-market.”

“Siemens Xcelerator, including Designcenter and Teamcenter, is built to help companies like H2 Core Systems design and collaborate more efficiently; by allowing them to visualize the complete product in 3D and collaborate seamlessly with stakeholders from anywhere, on any device, they can make informed design changes before production starts, saving time and money. This speeds the development of new solutions, allows greater innovation and enables customization based on customer needs,” said Joe Bohman, executive vice president, PLM Products, Siemens Digital Industries Software. “Siemens’ technologies help them reduce complex steps and deliver sustainable energy systems quickly to communities that need them.”

“By combining modular hydrogen energy systems with Siemens’ advanced software and automation hardware, we can continue to deliver sustainable energy solutions worldwide, quickly adapting to customer needs and scaling our impact,” says Thorsten Claussen, head of mechanical engineering, H2 Core Systems. “We use Designcenter X Solid Edge to fully digitize our dynamic product and production planning. Thanks to the innovative solutions for distributed teams and high variability, we can significantly accelerate our development processes and production preparations and thus considerably reduce the time-to-market of our hydrogen-based energy systems.”
