Radiation-Tolerant Isolated DC-DC Power Converters for LEO Industry

As both governmental and private organizations investigate the new space area for anything from 5G connectivity and cube satellites to Internet of Things applications, the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) industry is expanding quickly. Standard space grade solutions that are dependable, affordable, and customizable are in higher demand.

The MIL-STD-461 is met by the DC-DC 50W power converters of the off-the-shelf LE50-28 series. Customers may easily scale and configure the Radiation-Tolerant DC-DC 50W power converters by selecting one or three outputs depending on the voltage range required for the final application. The power converters also come with a companion EMI filter. Up to four power converters can be paralleled in this series for flexibility in reaching 200 watts.

The LE50-28 isolated DC-DC 50W power converters, which are intended for use with 28V bus systems, can be combined with Microchip’s PolarFire® FPGAs, microcontrollers, and LX7720-RT motor control sensor to create a fully functional electrical system. These very reliable radiation-tolerant power solutions can help designers save a lot of time when developing systems at the system level.

There are several mounting and electrical connection options available for the LE50-28 power converters. On a printed circuit board, standard surface mount and thru-hole components are used in the fabrication of the LE50 series. This manufacturing process differentiation can lower supply chain disruption risks and time to market.

With 50 Krad Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effects (SEE) latch-up immunity of 37 MeV•cm2/mg linear energy transfer, the LE50-28 series provides space-grade radiation endurance.

With its sub-QML approach, Microchip bridges the gap between conventional QML (Qualified Manufacturers List) components and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components by providing a broad range of components to enable the new space evolution.

Sub-QML components, which are made for novel space applications, are the best option because they combine the radiation tolerance of QML components with our history of space travel to allow for less screening requirements at a cheaper cost and faster lead times.
