Palomino Labs Moves on Vega Links to Scale AI Interconnects

THE VOLT VOTES

Palomino Laboratories is moving to sharpen its focus on AI networking, signing a binding Letter of Intent to acquire Vega Links in an all-stock deal, pending customary closing conditions. The planned transaction is designed to turn Palomino into a full-stack AI interconnect player rather than a niche connectivity vendor.

AI infrastructure is in the middle of one of its biggest architectural shifts in decades. Trillion-parameter models, accelerated computing and hyperscale “AI factories” are driving a need for much higher bandwidth, lower latency and far better power efficiency across the networking stack.

Industry efforts such as Ultra Ethernet, UALink™, scale-up and scale?in architectures, co-packaged optics (CPO), near-packaged optics (NPO) and next-generation optical I/O are reshaping how GPUs, CPUs, memory and networking systems talk to each other.

Palomino’s management sees the combination with Vega Links as a way to plug directly into this transition. Instead of betting on a single connectivity technology, the combined company aims to cover multiple layers of the AI interconnect ecosystem, with offerings that span copper, MicroVCSEL and MicroLED-based optical links.

The idea is to give customers a mix of options so they can optimize for cost, power consumption, reach, bandwidth and latency based on the needs of each part of their AI cluster.

Strategically, the deal would transform Palomino into a more comprehensive AI interconnect company and radically expand its addressable market.

Company estimates suggest the total opportunity could grow about tenfold, from roughly $6 billion to more than $60 billion. Vega Links also brings in deep expertise in AI systems architecture, networking and product development, adding to Palomino’s engineering bench as advanced AI networking trends gather pace.

Post-integration, Palomino expects to be better positioned around emerging initiatives such as UALink™, scale-up and scale-in topologies, optical I/O, CPO and NPO. To support that push, the company plans to appoint Karthik Gopalakrishnan as Chief Technology Officer and Rajesh Radhamohan as Chief Product Officer once the transaction closes, signaling a leadership refresh aligned with its expanded AI networking ambitions.

At the industry level, Palomino argues future AI clusters will rely on heterogeneous interconnects rather than a one-size-fits-all fabric.

Copper is likely to remain critical for very short-reach links, while optical solutions especially those based on MicroVCSEL and MicroLED are expected to take on a larger role as clusters scale out and performance demands climb. With a broader technology portfolio in hand, the combined company is positioning itself to chase opportunities across multiple segments of the fast-growing AI networking market.

Palomino Laboratories to acquire Vega Links The Volt PostLeadership Comments

Jeffrey B. Shealy, Co-founder & CEO of Palomino Laboratories, said, “AI infrastructure is evolving at an extraordinary pace, and interconnect technology has become one of the defining challenges for next-generation computing. Customers are seeking the optimal combination of bandwidth, latency, power efficiency and cost across increasingly complex AI fabrics.”

Mr. Shealy continued, “We believe combining Vega Links’ systems architecture expertise with Palomino’s optical innovations creates a differentiated AI interconnect platform capable of addressing customer challenges across multiple technologies. Our vision is to build a leading AI infrastructure company that enables the next generation of hyperscale AI deployments while advancing our long-term objective of qualifying for a Nasdaq listing.”

Karthik Gopalakrishnan added, “The future of AI networking will require close integration of system architecture, silicon and advanced interconnect technologies, such as GaN MicroLEDs. By joining forces with Palomino, we believe we can accelerate innovation and deliver compelling solutions for hyperscale cloud providers, AI infrastructure companies and enterprise customers.”
