Continental has announced that it will provide an access system that converts mobile devices like smartphones and smartwatches into automobile keys aka digital car key.

The smart device-based access solution, or CoSmA for short, is the name of this system. This CoSmA technology is touted to enable a user experience that is convenient and suitable for the digital era. Continental now provides a complete solution that ensures seamless connection between the digital ecosystems of the automobile, smart device, and cloud for the first time.

Smart-End Devices Enable Convenient and Secure Access

One essential part of the digital automobile key is the integrated CoSmA access system, which is dependent on smart devices. Thanks to the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, mobile devices like smartphones and smart watches may open and start the car on their own (hands-free).

“We are the driving force for our customers to efficiently and holistically advance complex topics such as sustainable vehicle digitalization with the help of relevant products. With the CoSmA keyless access system, we are providing a complete system that includes all hardware and software components for the first time,” explains Philipp von Hirschheydt, member of the Executive Board responsible for the Automotive division at Continental.

Vehicle owners do not need to give away physical keys since they can generate and manage many digital car keys simultaneously.

This implies that simply sending the virtual key to other individuals, family members and friends may easily share the car. The owner of the car has the ability to designate different privileges, allowing them to say, for instance, that someone can only open the car but not drive it.

When legitimate virtual keys(Digital car key) are detected on a device, the system starts the authentication process using Bluetooth Low Energy, a more energy-efficient version of the Bluetooth standard that may run constantly in the background.

If this works, UWB technology is then used to pinpoint the smart device’s location to the nearest centimeter.

The device must then be inside the designated vehicle area for the car to unlock. Because of this extremely precise signal localization, radio signals cannot be abusively intercepted. Additionally, the engine cannot be started until the confirmed end device has been identified within the car.

The Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), a cross-industry group that brings together automakers, smart device makers, and tech companies to promote mobile device integration and communication with cars, has standards that the CoSmA system completely complies with.

Continental is now offering Mercedes-Benz AG the whole CoSmA system for the first time, which includes transceivers with ultra-wideband radio technology, sophisticated software, and a central control unit.

Intelligent Continental Technologies for the Highest Level of Safety

Intelligent systems improve driving comfort and aid in early accident prevention. A robust long-range radar from Continental is utilized in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class to dependable supply information on approaching cars and barriers to sophisticated driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control and emergency braking aid.

The telematics control unit placed in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is another electronic safety component made by Continental.

It guarantees seamless data interchange with mobile phone networks and permits safety-related features like automated emergency call (eCall).

Intelligent control of the adaptive air suspension is provided by the Continental Air Supply (CAirS) system, a highly integrated control unit that combines a compressor, valve block, and electronic control unit in a single module. Thanks to system software created especially for this car, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class air suspension can be precisely adjusted in every situation to provide the ideal combination of outstanding driving stability and comfort.

The continuous panoramic picture offered by surround view cameras from the Continental portfolio ensures comfortable and safe maneuvering at all times, especially in low-light conditions. Additionally, the technology company’s light control modules, which intelligently manage the entire LED headlights, provide exceptional road lighting.

Safe on the road with factory-installed Continental tires

Mercedes-Benz E-Class installs Continental EcoContact 6 Q tires on the car from the factory, ensuring safe, quiet, and energy-efficient driving. This tire receives points for having a high mileage and using less energy.

It’s facilitated by a unique rubber mixture. It lessens rolling resistance and friction by lowering the tire’s energy absorption when driving. Additionally, even at high speeds, the EcoContact 6 Q impresses with its minimal rolling noise, dependable grip, and superb cornering stability. For the winter, there is also the Continental WinterContact TS 860 S tire.

This winter tire represents accurate handling on both dry and wet roads in freezing temperatures.

Enduring beauty: innovative surface materials make the interior particularly easy to clean and durable

The interior of Mercedes-Benz E-Class is characterized by creative and eco-friendly surface materials from Continental’s collection. The seats are covered in Acella synthetic leather with staynu technology, a cutting-edge technique that almost eliminates soiling of the surface material. The sustainable Acella upholstery material for the door and control panels is made from up to 30 percent recycled PET plastic bottles.
