Infineon, Vector To Help Automakers Design Secure Connected Cars

Together, Infineon and Vector are collaborating to improve vehicle cybersecurity to the next level.

Concurrently, there is a growing possibility of cyberattacks targeting automotive networks. To guarantee the safety of automobiles and passengers, automakers and suppliers must adopt the necessary security measures.

The collaboration is to improve vehicle cybersecurity to the next level. Vector’s AUTOSAR Classic embedded software MICROSAR Classic supports Infineon’s new AURIX™ TC4x microcontroller (MCU) family.

The most recent safety and cybersecurity standards, ISO/SAE 21434 and ISO 26262, are also met by the AURIX TC4x series.

Post-quantum cryptography is supported by the security concept, which also removes performance barriers in quick and secure communication.

Every AURIX TC4x MCU has a Cyber Security Satellite (CSS) and a Cyber Security Realtime Module (CSRM) with dedicated memory. Accelerators for parallel-executable cryptographic services are offered by the CSS.

Vector’s firmware The MICROSAR HSM facilitates the CSS’s hardware-accelerated cryptooperation computation.

In order to maximize throughput and remove delays caused by inter-process communication with the cyber security satellite, the host CPU’s MICROSAR Classic Crypto driver directly addresses the Crypto Satellite.

The firmware MICROSAR HSM is responsible for managing the keys between the CSS and the CSRM. When compared to traditional crypto hardware acceleration in HSMs, this architecture allows a notable speed boost.

“With the Crypto Satellite, Infineon offers a sophisticated and powerful solution. Thanks to the good and close cooperation, we were able to implement the firmware for the CSS at an early stage, which has already proven itself in prototype projects”, said Matthias Traub, Director of the Embedded Software and Systems department at Vector.

“Vector’s tools equip engineers with a significant advantage, enabling them to simplify and manage challenging and highly complex subject areas. Together with our MCUs, Vector and Infineon enable customers to achieve highest reliability and quality”, said Lars Wemme, Senior Vice President ADAS, Chassis & EE-Architecture at Infineon. “We look forward to a continued close partnership with our new AURIX TC4x generation.”

Infineon satisfies the needs of future software-defined vehicles with the new AURIX TC4x cyber security concept.

For instance, it supports SOTA (Software over the air) application scenarios, which call for the quick, safe, and secure distribution of software updates from the cloud and within the in-vehicle network.

Furthermore, the new security cluster supports authenticated encryption and communication protocols, both of which are becoming more and more important for platforms in the future.
