eSIM Index 2026 – US at 90.2, Markets Lag Behind

THE VOLT VOTES

Holafly launched the new Holafly Global eSIM Index 2026 – the first study of its kind to assess how ready 50 markets and 171 mobile network operators are for eSIM technology.

Created alongside TeleSemana.com, Latin America’s top telecommunications publication, the Index gives a clear, data-backed picture of how eSIM is actually working (or stumbling) around the world. It combines operator data, country-level factors, expert insight, and even a regulatory penalty system into one simple 0–100 score.

eSIM isn’t some future promise anymore it’s already live and working globally. What separates markets today isn’t whether the tech exists, but whether the conditions around it actually support adoption. Think device availability, sensible regulations, and a user experience that doesn’t fight you.

The United States takes the top spot with a 90.2 score, followed by Estonia and the UK.

On the other end, markets like Sudan, India, and Liberia show how structural barriers still hold adoption back. The Index makes it clear that regulatory intervention is a make-or-break factor. Some markets actively restrict international eSIM providers, which directly limits how scalable these services can be.

eSIM adoption isn’t held back by technology it’s held back by market design. Where rules allow digital activation, devices are easy to get, and operators deliver smooth experiences, adoption explodes. Where those pieces don’t line up, growth stays stuck.

The Index measures five key areas: Market readiness, activation and support, adoption and competition, regulatory environment, and expert assessment.

There’s also a penalty system that flags markets blocking international eSIM providers, so the scores reflect what users actually experience not just what operators claim they can do.

As travelers increasingly want flexible, instant, borderless ways to stay connected, travel eSIM providers are driving real change. By cutting through the hassle of physical SIMs and complicated activation, eSIM is reshaping how people access mobile services abroad and speeding up the shift toward genuinely seamless global travel.

The Holafly Global eSIM Index 2026 gives operators, regulators, and industry players a solid benchmark to understand where adoption is already happening, where it’s stuck, and where the biggest growth opportunities lie.

“eSIM has already moved beyond being an emerging technology. What will shape the next phase of adoption is how effectively markets enable seamless digital access for users. The countries leading this transition are not necessarily those with the largest telecom infrastructure, but those creating frictionless experiences that match the expectations of today’s global travelers,” said Chris Hills, VP of Carriers & Operations at Holafly.
