OMNIVISION is drastically cutting the energy drain of automotive parking surveillance with the launch of the OAX7700, a new ultralow-power AI companion processor. The always-on vision (AOV) chip is designed to transform existing exterior automotive cameras such as standard surround-view systems into smart, edge-AI security monitors while consuming 97% less power than current market solutions.

The secret to this massive energy reduction is the chip’s integrated neural processing unit (NPU). Running in a continuous, ultra-low-power state, the system monitors a vehicle’s surroundings for genuine threats.
Because the AI can accurately measure distance and detect humans and objects, it easily distinguishes between a real security event and false alarms triggered by stray birds, blowing wind, or falling debris.
When the system detects a legitimate trigger, the camera instantly snaps into normal operating mode. Crucially, the chip secures five to 10 seconds of pre-roll video. This allows the vehicle’s electronic control unit to validate the alert before sounding an alarm, while also providing car owners with vital forensic evidence of exactly what happened leading up to an incident.
By handling all of this decision-making directly at the edge, the new ultralow-power AI companion processor takes a significant processing burden off the vehicle’s central computer.
It also offers a highly flexible canvas for automakers. Developers can write and deploy their own custom AI algorithms directly onto the chipset and push sophisticated over-the-air (OTA) updates to drivers down the line, unlocking new features without compromising the chip’s minimal power footprint.
Key features of the OAX7700 ASIC:
- Ultralow-power vision AI processor with NPU
- Supports 24/7 always-on operation
- Built-in NPU enables OEM custom algorithms for human detection, object classification and distance estimation
- Only triggers on confirmed threat objects; avoids false triggers from non-threat motions
- Stacked PSRAM and flash memory in a 60-pin BGA package
Leadership Comment
“With the OAX7700 ASIC, we are enabling existing automotive camera solutions with highly efficient parking surveillance functionality while at the same time supporting modern software-defined vehicle architectures—our customers are investing in a system that can be updated and enhanced throughout the vehicle’s lifetime,” said David Ho, senior marketing manager at OMNIVISION. “We’ve leveraged the technology from our security market segment, where OMNIVISION is recognized as a global leader.”
OMNIVISION will be showcasing the new ASIC at AutoSens Europe in Booth 100, taking place Sept. 22-24, 2026, in Barcelona, Spain.
Packaging and Availability
The new ASIC comes in a 5.5 mm x 3.5 mm package. Samples are available now, with mass production scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
