Wasabi Technologies is strengthening its position in the fast-growing AI infrastructure market with the launch of a dedicated AI business and the appointment of semiconductor and storage industry veteran Pinaki Mukherjee as senior vice president and general manager.
Mukherjee will lead Wasabi’s AI strategy, partnerships and go-to-market initiatives from Silicon Valley as the company looks to address the growing storage demands created by AI workloads.
Wasabi currently stores hundreds of petabytes of AI data for frontier model labs, generative AI startups and neocloud compute providers around the world. The new business unit is designed to give this growing customer base a dedicated strategy and partnership focus as AI infrastructure continues to evolve.
Mukherjee brings two decades of industry experience
Mukherjee brings more than 20 years of experience across semiconductors, storage and AI infrastructure, with a track record of building technology ecosystems and developing strategic partnerships.
His previous roles include senior business strategy and corporate development positions at Fungible, Druva and Western Digital. He has also led semiconductor strategy and AI infrastructure engagements at global consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal.
Throughout his career, Pinaki Mukherjee has been involved in more than $2 billion in partnership-driven revenue and over $10 billion in strategic M&A and investment outcomes.
AI is changing how enterprises approach storage
The rapid growth of AI is making storage an increasingly important part of infrastructure planning. AI training workloads can repeatedly access the same datasets, while inference pipelines continuously move data between storage and GPU compute.
Traditional hyperscaler cloud pricing models, however, were not designed around these highly dynamic AI workloads. As data moves more frequently and unpredictably across different environments, organisations are also placing greater emphasis on avoiding vendor lock-in.
Wasabi’s approach is built around enabling data to move across the AI lifecycle and between the environments where compute is available. The company says its framework provides predictable, flat-rate storage costs without egress or API fees, while giving customers greater flexibility to use different infrastructure providers.
Under Pinaki Mukherjee’s leadership, Wasabi plans to extend this storage framework across the AI market and scale its partnerships and go-to-market activities.
Building on a decade of cloud storage infrastructure
Wasabi has spent the past decade developing cloud storage infrastructure that now supports petabytes of AI data for customers worldwide. The company operates across 16 storage regions and has a network of more than 18,000 channel partners, backed by over $700 million in funding to date.
Its partnership with Megaport, along with an expanding portfolio of developer and agentic AI capabilities including Wasabi MCP, is further broadening the company’s role in the AI infrastructure ecosystem.
With the dedicated AI business, Wasabi is looking to build on that foundation as storage becomes an increasingly strategic component of AI infrastructure.
