Renesas Boosts Edge AI Portfolio with Irida Labs Acquisition

THE VOLT VOTES

Renesas Electronics has announced that its subsidiary has completed the acquisition of Greece-based Irida Labs, a specialist in embedded software for AI-driven visual perception. Renesas acquires Irida Labs to strengthen its position in edge AI, one of its key growth priorities and expands its ability to deliver system-level solutions that combine physical AI with software.

As Renesas acquires Irida Labs, the company states to be better equipped to support camera and machine vision applications across a wide range of sectors, including industrial automation, robotics, smart cities, IoT, agriculture, and healthcare.

Irida Labs’ software and tools will also be integrated into Renesas 365, the company’s recently launched platform designed to streamline electronics system development from initial concept through to lifecycle management.

As demand for intelligent edge systems continues to rise, developers are facing increasing complexity. Building these systems requires balancing power-constrained hardware with advanced software, while also managing AI model training, deployment, latency, and data security challenges.

Vision AI software plays a central role here, enabling real-time interpretation of visual data in applications such as industrial inspection, robotics navigation, in-cabin sensing, traffic monitoring, smart retail, and security systems.

By bringing Irida Labs into its portfolio, Renesas is addressing these challenges head-on. The combination of its AI-enabled RA microcontrollers and RZ microprocessors with Irida’s lightweight Vision AI software and development tools allows Renesas to offer high-performance, power-efficient edge AI solutions that are ready for deployment. This marks another step toward delivering fully integrated Vision AI systems.

The two companies had already been working together prior to the acquisition, developing solutions that paired Irida Labs’ PerCV.ai software with Renesas’ RA and RZ devices. Now, with these capabilities in-house, Renesas can accelerate development cycles and deliver more tightly integrated offerings.

Looking ahead, Renesas plans to further embed Irida Labs’ technology into the Renesas 365 platform. Initially launched in March 2026 with support for RA MCUs, the platform will continue to evolve, adding new capabilities over time.

With the inclusion of Irida Labs’ tools, developers can expect a more seamless, end-to-end environment for building Vision AI and deep learning applications.

“This acquisition accelerates our efforts to simplify how intelligence is designed and deployed at the edge,” said Gaurang Shah, Vice President and General Manager, Embedded Processing Product Group. “With Irida Labs’ Vision AI tools, software and highly competent AI engineers now part of Renesas, our solution brings together AI perception, embedded processing, development tools and system integration to significantly reduce the learning curve for developers. As a result, they can rapidly develop, train and deploy edge AI systems without deep AI knowledge.”

Vassilis Tsagaris, CEO & Co-Founder of Irida Labs, added, “The joining of Irida Labs into Renesas marks an important milestone in our edge vision AI journey. By combining Irida Labs’ edge Vision AI expertise and our PerCV.ai software with Renesas hardware and global ecosystem, we open up exciting new opportunities to deliver meaningful impact on edge AI worldwide. I am proud of what the team has built, and genuinely excited to take it forward together with Renesasturning our shared vision into reality.”
