ROHM Advances Current Sensing with High-Power UCR10C Shunt Resistors

The “UCR10C Series”, developed by ROHM, is stated to offer the highest rated power for 2012-size shunt resistors (10 m? to 100 m?) in the industry.

In both the automotive and industrial equipment markets, shunt resistors are needed to handle higher power for current sensing. Furthermore, these markets now have more specific requirements for high junction reliability every year.

The new products from ROHM use sintering to form a resistive element based on copper on an alumina substrate. It achieves rated powers of 1.0W and 1.25W double that of equivalent-sized products, such as thick film types and metal plate types by improving the heat dissipation structure.

This makes it possible to replace products with larger alternatives or wide terminal types,  facilitating miniaturization and reducing the number of components required.

Additionally, a low TCR (0 to +60 ppm/°C) is achieved by using a metal resistive element. High-precision current sensing is made possible by reducing temperature-related inaccuracies.

Furthermore, in temperature cycle testing (-55°C/+155°C, 1000 cycles), it attains the same degree of endurance as the metal plate types. This enables stable, long-term operation and guarantees high bonding reliability even in situations with severe temperature variations, such as automotive use.

These products are available on online purchase (sample price: $0.5/unit, excluding tax) and can be purchased through online distributors such as DigiKey, Mouser and Farnell.

As part of its future expansion plans, ROHM has also commenced development of the 3216-size (2W) sintered metal shunt resistor, the “UCR18C Series”, further enhancing its product line-up that combines high power, high precision and high reliability.
