Renesas Powering 800 Volt Direct Current AI Data Center Architecture

GaN FET switches and other wide bandgap semiconductors are rapidly becoming a crucial option because of their superior thermal management, reduced energy losses, and faster switching.

Furthermore, the development of 800V direct current buses within racks will be made possible by GaN power devices, which will allow for the reuse of 48V components using DC/DC step-down converters while also drastically lowering distribution losses and the requirement for massive bus bars.

The next generation of faster, smarter AI infrastructure will be fueled by Renesas Electronics Corporation’s announcement that it supports effective power conversion and distribution for NVIDIA’s 800 VDC power architecture.

Modern data centers must implement power designs that are both energy optimized and scalable as GPU-driven AI workloads increase and data center power usage surpasses 100 megawatts.

The GaN-based power solutions from Renesas are particularly well-suited for the job; they enable dense and effective DC/DC power conversion at operating voltages ranging from 48V to 400V, with the possibility of stacking up to 800V. These converters have an efficiency of up to 98 percent and are based on the LLC Direct Current Transformer (LLC DCX) topology.

Bi-directional GaN switches are used by Renesas to boost power density and simplify rectifier designs for the AC/DC front-end. The new DC/DC converters‘ BOM is enhanced with Renesas REXFET MOSFETs, drivers, and controllers. For additional information, go to renesas.com/power.
