BlackBerry Limited subsidiary QNX stated that Medha Servo Drives Pvt. Ltd. has chosen its technology as the software foundation for a next-generation railway protection system that would be implemented across multiple monorail and metro rail projects in India.
The core of the deployment is Medha’s Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which allows for accurate, real-time control of train operations and is powered by the QNX OS for Safety. The solution facilitates safe, effective, and automated train travel across various rail settings and is made to be integrated into a variety of urban transportation systems.
With advanced automation and constant communication, Medha’s CBTC system is designed to allow trains to operate safely and effectively in metro rail environments.
It makes it possible to coordinate train movements, maximize headways, and cut down on delays, all of which improve operational efficiency and the overall traveler experience.
Medha’s CBTC is powered by QNX OS for Safety, which is pre-certified to IEC 61508 SIL3, in order to satisfy the strict requirements of EN50128 SIL 4 certification, the highest safety integrity level for railway signaling applications.
This integration provides the reliability and fault tolerance needed for contemporary rail infrastructure while enabling adherence to international safety requirements.
QNX OS for Safety has been deployed in rail systems around the world, including with South Korea’s KORAIL Metro, where it serves as the foundational platform for sTraffic’s unmanned train control system, and within Portugal’s national rail network, where Critical Software selected QNX to support a safety-critical railway protection system.
These global implementations underscore QNX’s reputation as a trusted provider of high-assurance software for rail transportation infrastructure.
