Trinasolar led the Global Perovskite Solar Cell Invention Patent Ranking provided by IPRdaily, with 481 patent applications. Trinasolar also ranked second in the global solar cell and module patent rankings, as well as the TOPCon solar cell patent rating.
These rankings are based on keyword and categorization criteria specific to perovskite solar cell technology, generic solar cell and module technologies, and TOPCon solar cell technology. The data includes inventive patents filed and published globally in the ten years preceding March 31, with patents with the same application number combined.
Perovskite solar cells, a next-generation photovoltaic technology, have enormous potential for advancement. Their efficiency far exceeds that of classic silicon-based solar cells, and the utilization of low-temperature solution processing allows for cheaper manufacturing costs and more applications.
Since 2014, Trinasolar has steadily boosted its investment and strategic patent portfolio planning in the realm of perovskites.
Trinasolar has the most perovskite-related patent applications in the world (481). According to IPRdaily’s investigation, Trinasolar has created a State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology in conjunction with Fudan University in Shanghai.
It has formed an Innovation Center for Next-Generation PV Technologies and Equipment Manufacturing with over ten industry partners. Trinasolar is developing next-generation photovoltaic technologies, primarily crystalline silicon tandem solar cells, and has already set world records for cell efficiency and module power in the perovskite-silicon tandem field this year.
Oxford PV has also granted the company an exclusive license to conduct research, manufacture, sell, offer for sale, use, and distribute perovskite cell technology, perovskite/perovskite tandem technology, and perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar PV products in mainland China, as well as sublicensing rights to local manufacturers.
TOPCon technology not only dominates the current market, but it is also ideal for use as the bottom cell in tandem designs, according to IPRdaily. The combination of TOPCon and perovskite in tandem solar cells remains remarkably active, with great potential for further efficiency increases and extended application scenarios. Over the last three years, 82.78% of Trinasolar’s TOPCon patent applications have been filed, representing one of the industry’s highest growth rates.
