A multi-year agreement between STMicroelectronics and Renault Group on the supply of Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules is the next step in Ampere and STMicroelectronics’ strategic cooperation, which will begin in 2026.
This agreement is part of their collaboration on a powerbox for the inverter for Ampere’s ultra-efficient electric powertrain. Using Ampere’s knowledge of EV technology and STMicroelectronics’ knowledge of advanced power electronics, the two companies collaborated to optimize the power module, a crucial component of the powerbox, for the e-powertrain’s maximum performance and competitiveness.
To run the electric motor, power modules—which are made up of many silicon carbide chips—manage and transform electrical power from the battery. They are an essential component of an electric car’s efficiency since they affect the battery range, electric powertrain efficiency, and energy regeneration capabilities. Additionally, they make driving more responsive and seamless.
A powerbox for Ampere’s new generation of electric motors has been developed in partnership with STMicroelectronics. Greater autonomy and quicker charging are made possible by the powerbox’s optimal performance-to-size ratio, which is intended for Ampere’s 400-volt battery EVs and Segment C-EVs with 800-volt batteries.
One of the most important levers for achieving a 10%–80% rapid charge in 15 minutes or fewer is 800 volts. This deal is completely in line with Ampere’s plan to fully control the electric car value chain, especially by collaborating with its partners farther upstream and guaranteeing optimal efficiency at every stage.
STMicroelectronics, an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), guarantees supply security and quality to support carmakers’ electrification plans. STMicroelectronics’ leadership and system-level competence in advanced power electronics, particularly its packaging skills, are demonstrated by the partnership with Ampere on the silicon carbide power modules and powerbox affirmed its official release.
Key Comments
