Thread Group, Broadband Forum Join Forces to Streamline IoT Connectivity

THE VOLT VOTES

The Thread Group, an industry alliance representing more than 240 companies behind the Thread wireless mesh protocol for IoT, has partnered with the Broadband Forum to improve how Thread networks integrate with broadband-managed environments.

The collaboration opens the door for device manufacturers and service providers to work more closely together, ultimately delivering fully managed smart home and building services.

As IoT adoption continues to surge, the need for tighter coordination between connected devices and broadband infrastructure is becoming more urgent. Today, more than 19 billion IoT devices sit behind home gateways worldwide, a number expected to nearly double by 2030. With service providers increasingly managing these environments, ensuring seamless interoperability is critical.

Thread plays a key role here by providing a low-power, IP-based mesh network that connects devices reliably to each other and the internet.

Meanwhile, the Broadband Forum develops the standards that govern how broadband networks manage and monitor those connections. By aligning their efforts, the two organizations aim to simplify device setup, improve connection reliability, and reduce compatibility issues across ecosystems.

Both groups are vendor-neutral and IP-focused, bringing together nearly 400 member companies. Through this agreement, they will share technical specifications and best practices to enhance interoperability between Thread networks and broadband-managed systems, particularly those based on the User Services Platform (USP/TR-369).

The collaboration will also define joint interoperability requirements across both consumer and enterprise IoT use cases, helping ensure consistent performance across a growing range of connected environments.

Thread Group has already certified more than 1,000 products built on its mesh networking protocol, enabling devices from different manufacturers to operate on a unified network. The Broadband Forum, with over three decades of work, has developed more than 250 globally adopted standards used across billions of broadband devices.

This agreement adds to Thread Group’s growing list of partnerships with major industry bodies, including the Connectivity Standards Alliance, DALI Alliance, BACnet, and the KNX Association, further strengthening the foundation for a more connected and interoperable IoT ecosystem.

Executive Perspectives from Vividh Siddha, President, Thread Group

“Thread now connects more than 1,000 certified products inside homes and buildings. Broadband connects those spaces to the world. With Point-Topic estimating there are over 1.5 billion broadband subscriptions globally, aligning these two layers by design means fewer integration problems for operators and a better experience for the people who live and work in these spaces.”

Executive Perspectives from – John Blackford, Chairman of the Board, Broadband Forum

“Our members manage broadband standards deployed across billions of devices worldwide. Thread’s IP-native mesh networking fits naturally into that ecosystem. This liaison gives both communities a framework to solve real interoperability challenges and bring better-connected products to market faster.”
