ROHM Breaks ESD Trade-Off With Ultra-Low Capacitance, Low-Rdyn Diodes

ROHM has introduced a new family of ESD protection diodes, the RESDxVx series that set a high bar for both ultra-low capacitance and extremely low dynamic resistance (Rdyn).

These characteristics make the new family of ESD protection diodes a strong fit for an expanding range of high-speed data communication applications where signal integrity and IC protection are equally critical.

Over the past few years, the rise of high-speed data transmission and the steady miniaturization of high-performance electronics have reshaped both industrial and automotive systems.

At the same time, shrinking form factors and added functionality have reduced IC tolerance to electrical overstress (EOS) and ESD, which in turn has pushed demand for external protection devices that can simultaneously offer low capacitance and low dynamic resistance.

In next-generation communication links running above 10 Gbps, even tiny amounts of parasitic capacitance can distort signal waveforms and degrade performance.

Traditionally, reducing capacitance has come at the expense of higher dynamic resistance, forcing designers to compromise between signal quality and robust IC protection. ROHM’s new RESDxVx series is designed to cut through that trade-off.

The series supports high-speed interfaces by delivering ultra-low terminal capacitance just 0.24 pF for bidirectional devices and 0.48 pF for unidirectional ones while driving dynamic resistance down to an impressive 0.28 ohm.

This combination translates into a clamping voltage roughly 40% lower than conventional ESD diodes, giving sensitive ICs much stronger protection without sacrificing transmission quality.

Those improvements make the RESDxVx series well suited for a broad range of high-speed data communication equipment, from industrial infrastructure such as AI servers and 5G/6G base stations to mainstream consumer devices like notebook PCs and gaming consoles.

For automotive applications, ROHM has also introduced RESDxVxBASAFH and RESDxVxUASAFH in the compact DFN1006-2W package, both of which are AEC-Q101 qualified.

These variants are tailored for demanding automotive-grade systems, including cameras for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving, as well as Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that rely on SerDes-based communication.

Looking ahead, ROHM plans to expand its portfolio of low-capacitance ESD protection and TVS diodes while advancing broader electronics technologies in areas like AI servers, communication infrastructure, and autonomous driving systems.
