The test-stand world for automotive drivetrains is changing fast especially with e?mobility pushing higher speeds and more complex test profiles. But one thing hasn’t changed precision, reliability, and process safety are still non-negotiable when it comes to measurement technology.

Building on its proven ROBA DS steel disk-pack coupling, mayr power transmission has developed a lightweight aluminum version named ROBA DS Type 9120.

It keeps the same performance density as the steel model but trims the package significantly. The outside diameter shrinks by up to 10 mm, while mass and mass moment of inertia drop to about 40-60% of the steel equivalent, depending on size and design.

The new ROBA DS 9120 takes advantage of years of experience in high-speed test-stand applications and is rated for speeds up to 32,000 rpm.

Thanks to its lightweight build and low inertia, it imposes smaller restoring forces on the system, while still delivering high rigidity and elasticity where it matters.

A balance quality of G 2.5 at 5,000 rpm ensures smooth, low-vibration running across the speed range, which is a key prerequisite for highly accurate torque measurements.

Standard features include IT6 manufacturing tolerances, a nickel?plated surface, stainless?steel disk packs, and galvanized connecting screws for robust corrosion protection. Backlash?free connections via shrink disk hubs (or external shrink disk hubs) support repeatable, stable measurements.

The coupling is also compatible with all common torque transducers, making it easy to integrate into existing test-stand setups.

Thanks to its modular construction, the ROBA DS 9120 can be flexibly configured for everything from high-performance R&D test stands to end?of?line production testing.

Safety brakes for test-stand applications

Couplings are only one piece of the puzzle. mayr power transmission also offers a broad range of safety brakes for test-stand use, designed to protect people and equipment in dynamic environments.

For vertical axes and linear movements, the ROBA guidestop profiled rail brake clamps moving masses directly into position with high rigidity and zero backlash.

It’s available in hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromagnetic versions and works with common linear guides.

The ROBA linearstop piston rod brake handles linear motion on round rods as a fail?safe safety brake that stays closed when de?energized and is built for dynamic emergency stops, with six sizes covering brake forces from 70 N to 17,000 N.

The ROBA-stop M series delivers compact motor-side safety, acting either as a holding brake that keeps the system securely in place or as a dynamic brake that brings loads to a standstill as quickly as possible.

Brakes that “talk”: Smart monitoring for smarter test stands

Modern test environments demand constant, actionable data. The ROBA brake-checker module does exactly that for safety brakes. It monitors brakes sensorlessly while also supplying power.

By analyzing current and voltage profiles, it detects the brake’s switching state and can warn the user before the brake struggles to release under current conditions.

That helps spot issues like low supply voltage, undersized wiring, elevated coil temperature, or an enlarged air gap and turn them into planned maintenance steps.

Anomalies in test-stand behavior can be caught early, maintenance becomes predictable, and unplanned downtime drops. The concept also supports integration into remote maintenance systems, so teams can keep test-stand safety and performance under control from anywhere.
